Celebrity chef, globe-trotting restaurateur, cookbook author, provedore and savvy entrepreneur - Mr Luke Mangan wears many hats. Managing to find some time in between overseeing four international restaurants, including Sydney's acclaimed Glass Brasserie and the P&O Pacific Jewel cruise liner restaurant Salt Grill, Mangan has added another notch to his belt in the form of this South Melbourne gastropub. The Palace by Luke Mangan maintains the historical facade of the former Palace Hotel, while the interiors usher you into a crisp modern space that encompasses bar, lounge, beer garden, casual dining and private formal dining spaces.
And then there's the food, of course. The menu covers a plethora of predominantly Modern Australian tastes in seafood, grills, charcuterie, cheeses and decadent desserts (Brits may well enjoy the inclusion of the Eton mess on the dessert menu). Last but not least, the selection of cocktails, wines and beers ensures that nobody goes home thirsty.

Poor service really lets this place down
I have been to this place twice, and both times, very good food was not balanced with very good service. Wait times between entree and main course was over an hour and the manager unapologetic. For the prices one pays ($18 entree, $40 mains, $15 desserts), I expect better. Pan fried gnocchi and liquorice parfait were my favourite dishes, although some friends into rich desserts rave about the chocolate one. A real shame that this place is not up to par. There are better places in Melbourne. I personally would not waste your time and money here!
