Sydney's historic Rocks district has played host to this stately hotel since 1844. The restaurant serves up quality mod-Oz cuisine, while the bar menu offers more casual dining options. Crisp white linen provides the backdrop for seasonal dishes such as a veal sweetbread tartlet with wild mushrooms and Taleggio cheese, as well as the peppered beef carpaccio served with celeriac remoulade, capers, eschallots and anchovy mayonnaise.
Treats such as the buttermilk pudding with orange blossom water and lychees encourage diners to leave room for dessert. The wine list boasts an extensive range of Australian labels with more than 20 available by the glass. If you'd prefer to have a round of pool with lunch, the food served in the bar (or the sandstone courtyard) is above-average pub grub, with options such as the chorizo frittata, or the kangaroo, bush tomato and alpine pepper pie served with mash, peas and gravy.
