The Olive Tree originally had its roots in Outram Street, tempting Perthites and visitors with a fine array of set menu options. More than 35 years later, it's firmly established on Emerald Terrace in a picture-perfect cottage that provides a delightfully charming setting for an informal fine dining experience. Little wonder it's such a popular choice for business execs seeking a well-earned lunch break or for families celebrating special occasions. As well as the set two- and three-course options, there is a small a la carte lunch menu. But in the evening, it's exclusively set menus. Each one flaunts a good mix of modern European and Australian dishes, and there's a good selection of well-established favourites on the neat little wine list.

Not a pleasant experience
I was with a party of over 20 - my first visit to this restaurant. Apart from the chicken being slightly dry, our food was delicious, beautifully prepared and well presented. The wait staff didn't know much about what they were doing however, but the worst part was having to argue about being overcharged.

A romantic night out in October
David and I chose this restaurant based on the fact that I had been their previously with my father and had a great experience. David and I felt the three course meal was delicious - the service was promt, however the atmosphere was a bit average - perhaps because they were so busy.

a great night out in west perth
We had a really good night out at the olive tree tonight. The food was awsome, and very fast. It looked very busy but we didn't have to wait too long for our meals. We had a table of 15 friends. The salmon was cooked to perfection and really melted in my mouth. I would go back again sometime, the staff was really great and we had a fantastic night.

Hovering and excess garnish are dead giveaways to restaurant horror
After being led down a massive passageway through a renovated 1930s house, one was seated with the waiting party in a stuffy large area at the back of the property. This was a sign of things to come.
Service staff were not in good communication, particularly evidenced by interruptions every 3-4 minutes when the party was obviously not ready to order. Poor communication with the kitchen led to dishes not all coming out on time, with two of the six present being forced to wait 15min longer than the others for their mains with neither waitstaff or kitchen knowing what had happened. The customers were further annoyed by having at least four different wait staff for the evening, who could not even keep track of who ordered what.
The food quality is not what I would have expected from this establishment, with the fettuccine being dry and lacking in sauce. There was also a major reliance on garnishes for presentation, and no focus on the quality or taste of dishes. This was particularly evidenced by the house special, with overcooked chicken and an overpowering sauce. It was anything but special.
Conversation was extremely difficult due to heavy rains and the poor design of roof treatments, and the environment was also quite stuffy with no consideration given to ventilation. In short, if money is the issue then find somewhere better in your price range. If location and ambiance is what you seek, spend your money in some of the finer establishments in the area and avoid being embarrassed by this poor performer.

Poor customer service
I chose to dine at this restaurant because their website advertised a three-course menu for $29.95, which I thought was a pretty good deal. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were told the three-course menu was $39.95. When I mentioned the discrepancy to the waitress, she said the website was out-of-date, and had been for a long time, and they couldn't offer us the three-course menu for the advertised price. I asked to speak to the owner and explained to her I didn't think it was fair we had to pay a different price from the one advertised on their website, especially since I had chosen to go to this restaurant based on the advertised price. I was shocked when she told me I could leave. If I had not been with a party of five, I would have. I was then served a dish I hadn't ordered, though the waiter said the dish was similar to the one I had ordered. I told him the dish I ordered had pasta in it, and this one had none, and I'd like to have the dish I ordered. Although the food was mostly satisfactory, I thought the service poor, so I would never go to this restaurant again.
