The Mill

Replete with an a la carte menu, a bar menu, a set menu and an extensive wine and cocktail list, the plethora of experiences to be had at this restaurant and bar are hardly run of the mill.

Situated on historic Hardware Lane, this 19th-century warehouse has been converted into a sophisticated den of fine dining and very fine drinking. The two-level space is dressed in decadent shades of chocolate brown and gold, with the venue's Florence Broadhurst-style floral emblem echoed throughout the building. Street seating and large arched windows provide top-class people-perving to complete the vibrant atmosphere.

Head chef Carl Dahren serves up a menu of modern Australian dishes, with hints of Asian influences: a classic dish such a chicken, mushroom and prosciutto terrine might sit on the menu alongside the miso-glazed corn-fed chicken breast with saute of green beans, baby carrots and prawn ginger mayo. After dark, The Mill becomes a dim and sultry haven for intimate dining and drinking, abound with live jazz music on Sundays and tapas and cocktails to be found in the lush basement bar, Charlie's Bar, till late.

A great night out
We recently celebrated a friends 30th upstairs at the Mill. The service was friendly, prompt and very efficient. The food was excellent value, and my salmon was cooked to perfection with a sweet creamy kumara mash. My friends enjoyed their Barramundi specials complementing the zingy flavours of the sauce and the freshness of the fish. My absolute standout though was the cheese plate, one of the best I've had, a good serve of cheese, complete with sourdough, fruit bread, lavosh, slice pear and a fabulous chutney. I'd go back just for that. We had reserved a spot down in Charlie's after dinner, which was great too, but that's another story....

Just wonderful
I ate at the Mill last Sunday evening. We actually popped in for a quick drink since we noticed they had a jazz band playing upstairs in the bar area. We ordered a couple of tapas at the bar (the seared prawns were juicy with just the right amount of garlic) and then decided to stay on for dinner. I had the Risotto with baked pumpkin, beetroot and goats cheese, it was sensational, the flavours and textures worked really well. My boyfriend had the Rangers Valley sirloin on roasted chats, he is still raving about how good it was. Highly recommended, we've already made another booking!

Unfortunate Experience
I was looking forward to taking my fiance out for a beautiful meal so I booked at The Mill after searching online.

There was only one other couple there the entire time and yet we were seated in the back corner with the exit sign casting a green glow over our table.
The meals took way too long to come out considering there was noone in the restaurant and my lamb main was under cooked and very chewy. Our desserts seemed as though they had been heated up in the microwave which was disappointing.

There was a beautiful jazz band playing (a big reason I chose this restaurant) but unfortunately as we were seated in the absolute opposite side of the restaurant we did not get to enjoy their performance.

We will not be going back to the Mill.

Fantastic food, very nice waitresses, but shocking door staff!!!
I've been to the mill twice now, and have found the food to be really fantastic and the waitresses wonderfully mannered.

Unfortunately, the staff member who seated us was exceptionally rude and almost put us off eating there completely!

I'd only recommend eating here if you don't mind being treated rudely.

Very slow, not worth the wait
Work lunch for 6 people, we prefer to take only an hour, but it took almost that just for our meals to arrive. All of us were having a main only, just bowls of pasta, so it shouldn't take that long. It wasn't even busy. I had the seafood lingiuni. Not a generous serve of seafood. Too much oil & chilli. I won't be back. Reinforces my disappointing experience of eating in Hardware St. Such a pity none of the cafes live up to the pretty location.

one of the best venues in Melbourne
Having taken quite a few corporate clients to the Mill in the past, I decided to take my girlfriends along to my favourite restaurant for dinner. We had a great evening, everything was fantastic - service, atmosphere, food...love, love love the chocolate brownie! Afterwards we all went down to Charlie's Bar and enjoyed a few of their $9 cocktails. This place is one of Melbourne's best kept secrets, highly recommended.
