The Lark

In its 130-year lifetime, this two-level cottage has been a revolving door for restaurateurs, but something tells us all that has changed. The Lark has picked its mark perfectly in Paddington, catering for the well-heeled, the urbane and the over-25. Downstairs, the backlit bar takes up most of the space; swinging a cat would be difficult, but it's spirited, cosy and packed most nights. As much shabby-chic as million-dollar makeover, upstairs is a velvet-draped retreat. Meanwhile, you'll never look better than in the courtyard's flattering glow.

Food-wise, expect modern tapas and mid-sized mains that are great for sharing. Simple and seasonal, it's all designed with the drinker in mind - from the charcuterie plate to the beef spare ribs and the herb-baked camembert. As you might expect from former Bowery man Perry Scott, the drinks list has a cocktail bias, and it's cleverly arranged to point you in the right direction. As both a restaurant and wine/cocktail bar, the Lark is the kind of neighbourhood joint you'd cross town for.

A wonderful place
This is my favourite bar in Brisbane, but I feel a slight sense of guilt writing a review because it remains to be a nicely kept secret. As someone in their 30s who has completely grown out of the whole Valley scene with hoards of young drinkers, this is the perfect place to get nicely tipsy in a sophisticated yet unpretentious and friendly surrounding.

It's small, cosy and sophisticated. The drinks and waitstaff are outstanding...the atmosphere is relaxed enough to bring a gang of friends and intimate enough to make it a superb location for a relaxed date. The downstairs section has a great garden-style area perfect for groups, and upstairs is a dimly-lit area which reminds me of a cosy retro lounge room, ideal for more intimate gatherings. The cocktail list is second to none, well priced and expertly prepared. They also have a good range of tapas-style food in case you get the munchies - and substantial enough if you want to have a light dinner. I love this place - they've got the formula spot on and I wish there were more bars like this in Brisbane.
