The answer is yes, in case you were wondering. Yes, the tall, dark, handsome restaurant also translates into flesh and blood. The Italian is both a restaurant and a man, and the man goes by the not-so-unknown title of Roberto Scheriani. The Italian is tucked away in one of Melbourne's shyest backstreets, but its lofty elevation above the street is as bold as the chefs on display through the large street windows.
The body of the restaurant is astonishingly narrow, with two lines of small tables and chairs flanking the aisle. But what it lacks in hips, it makes up in legs - the room just goes on and on. There's an upstairs as well, just above the kitchen, that seats a bunch of people in perfect privacy. The menu relies heavily on the luscious and fresh ingredients that make up the very core of Italian cookery. Take the signature dish: tuna carpaccio with marinated anchovies. Could deliciously simple cuisine be making a comeback?

Gourmet Travller 2009 Australian Restaurant Guide - "The Italian is the quintessential businessman's restaurant - professional and consistent, rarely taking an eye off the Zegna-suited ball. No wonder it's been a success."

Five out of of Five Guys ---- Thanks
Freaking awesome is all I can say. What an imposing location. What attentive service. I just can't stop thinking about it. The simplicity of the brodo with home made tortellini was inspiring but then came the crumbed John Dory and well it was bliss. We took dessert and coffee in the courtyard. Imagine that, a courtyard bigger than my block back home and inside 101 Collins Street as well. Heads up to Partick, Bobby and Carla who simply completed the evening with their attention to detail. Never been to a more comfortable place. Trust me. Get there soon ! Thanks guys.

BAD SERVICE
The waiter was incredibly rude. First he scoffed at an order of coffee before the meal. Then rudely asked where the rest of our party was. Then we couldn't understand him when telling us the specials. Then he scoffed at us ordering chips with our meals. He then whisked away the plates before we were finished and came with the bill printed out, before asking us about coffee or desserts. After we decided not to get dessert due to his rudeness and asked for the bill, he told us that our bill was the lowest he'd ever seen. We could not believe that he could make such a comment, especially since he printed out the bill before we even asked for it. The food was ok, but the waiter totally ruined our night. We will never go there again, and suggest that you shouldn't either.

The only thing that shines is the food
And unfortunately it wasn't enough to either encourage me to go back to The Italian or to persuade anyone else to dine there. After hearing great things, I expected a sure fire good night for my father's birthday. We didn't have one and the waiter was largely to blame. He was rude. The rudest I have ever experienced. He kept poking my sister in the arm with his finger whenever he wanted her attention. He must have done this 4 or 5 times during the meal. What kind of waiter touches their customers in such a rude manner. He got orders wrong and never apologised. We waited ages for our food. He all around had a really bad attitude. When we complained to his manager, he seemed more worried about the fact that they were getting slammed. And I don't blame him. That restaurant was so crammed full of people it felt like a fancy food hall rather than a top Melbourne restaurant. No thanks, no more for me.

GREAT FOOD
The food was magic, the wine list very good, the service was workman like, but the seating was too cramped and the background music did nothing for the ambience
