Making its presence known in mid-2011, the Hungry Buddha represents a coming-of-age of sorts for Canberra's dining scene.
The nation's capital has always had plenty of restaurants that were considered exotic a few generations ago - pasta and red sauce trattorias, "westernised" Chinese diners and their ilk - but to embrace a restaurant that serves traditional Nepalese cuisine shows just how far the local scene has come.
Enter the hungry Buddha, a sleek reinterpretation of a small space in the Curtin Shopping Plaza. The menu here panders to no local tastes, instead serving authentic Nepalese, Indian and Malaysian dishes that remain true to their Asian roots. It's a bold move and one that deserves to be supported by diners who want more diversity in the tapestry of their local restaurant scene.
