There is an old saying that the difference between Australia and a tub of yoghurt is that after 200 years a tub of yoghurt has developed some culture. Well, the Hero of Waterloo is the exception to this rule.
Arguably Sydney's oldest, and definitely it's most iconic pub, the Hero is the epitome of Australian culture. Built in 1843 from sandstone hauled up from the Argyle Cut, from the legendary rum-smuggling cellar tunnels to its ghost walk tours and National Trust heritage status, every inch of this vintage pub is a testament to Sydney's history, including the food.
The menu alone reads like an Australian history lesson, with British colonial bangers and mash giving way to lamb shanks with a port wine jus and the quintessentially Australian Hero beef burger. It's topped with the lot (of course beetroot comes standard) and served on a traditional damper roll.
