This revitalised old pub serves traditional food with just a hint of originality, creating familiar yet different dishes such as a rack of Castricum lamb with confit tomatoes, black olives, feta and spiced eggplant chutney. Popular with locals and visitors, it's a great spot to enjoy a drink - a tap beer or wine from the international list - and a good, hearty meal.

3 entrees to satsfy
My husband and I went after many a recommendation to the Healesville Hotel and were not disappointed with the food but slightly with the atmosphere.
We had the squid special with giant cous cous and coriander salad which was cooked beautifully. We also dove into the marrow with snails and parsley salad which once again was cooked perfectly and the snails were soft and flavoursome. Finally, my husband had the semolina crusted sardines which he said we perfect.
Sadly we didn't know that the hotel was under renovations so we couldn't go in there after. However, we did manange to sit at a wobbly table and quite a few of the flower decorations were dying and dead, which was a bit of a shame.
The waitress we had was young, knowledgeable and lovely.
Would definately go there again....would love to try dinner!

Healesville Hotel
Greeted by a friendly waitress who offered a choice of restaurant or bistro. No booking required. Food just OK, curry a bit tasteless and fish and chips smallish. Great atmosphere and service though.

Bovine bites
For the Wifelet and I, the Queen's Birthday long weekend meant a trip to Marysville - a three-day indulgence in healthy hikes, warming log fires and comforting red wine.
Now the area's rustic charms may have been tempered by some well-publicised murders a while ago, but there's no doubting there are an awful lot of cattle grazing contentedly in bucolic bliss. Peacefully grazing they appear to be models of contentment.
Seeing such fine animals, there was nothing for it, as we drove home, than to drop in at the Healesville Hotel and eat their cousins. Sirloin for one, veal for the other.
Well-executed dishes, with garlic and rosemary tatties to the side.
The place itself offers the charms and style of a true English 'gastropub'. A finely tuned balance of comfort, style, informality and sound food. Service was attentive and the food was certainly good enough to demand another visit.
Now I'm hoping that the beef we ate lived as contentedly as the cattle we saw in Marysville - maybe next time I'll ask the waiter. But for now, it's enough to know this place is a real gem. And you don't even need a long weekend to get there.
