Despite the far out name, Groove Train is less interested in mung beans than coffee beans and is populated less with free-loving hippies than with stylish Melburnians. It is a successful combination that has seen several Groove Train cafes pop up across the Melbourne region, with this CBD version the largest of the lot. The menu will be familiar to fans of the South Melbourne and Richmond Groove Trains, boasting the same dizzyingly long list of brekkie classics, nachos and other nibbles, warm salads and woodfired pizzas. The extensive list of main courses ranges from Aussie favourites such as fish and chips or a steak sandwich, to a Thai seafood curry.

Rude service
We booked a large table for 6:30pm weeks before and then when we arrived we were told we had to be out by 8pm. When we asked for water, the waiter told us that there were no glasses left so we could only order bottled water (!?). We were rushed to order, rushed to eat and before we'd even left at 8:02 our tables were being cleaned under our noses. It was the rudest service I've ever received, and that food wasn't good enough to make up for it. On principle I would never go here again.

Generous portions, good atmosphere
It's a nice place to sit down and have some drinks and a snack after work. Been here a few times and had good experiences overall. Oh, and the portions here are really big (to me at least)!

Service not up to scratch
Whilst I agree that Groove Train has a desireable atmosphere and is great for accomodating large groups, it is let down by its wait staff. Firstly, as I entered the restaurant I was hurriedly directed to sit at a particular table number by a waiter who gestured which direction the table was in but did not lead me to it. My friends and I, not being able to find the table number, sat at a booth. To our embarrasment we were told my the manager to move to a smaller table as it was going to be a busy night. In addition, as I asked a waiter for the bill, I was told to pay at the counter - as i arrived at the counter it was a different story, where there were no staff free to assist me in paying my bill. After waiting at the counter for a couple of minutes like a fool, I was then told by the waitress there that I could have just settled my bill at my table.

Birthday dinner
On the weekend I chose to have my birthday at The Groove Train, I booked for 25 people and being such a big group I was a little worried about food coming out together etc. The Groove Train absolutely surpassed my expectations the atmosphere was funky and buzzing, the food came out at the same time all served hot and was absolutely delicious.
The wait staff were amazing and really looked after us. The dinner was topped off with complimentary cake and was the perfect way to start my birthday celebrations! A+ experience, I would abolsutely recommend this restaurant for a funky dinner for 2 to a big group celebration!
