This modest little joint (without even any street signage) does a brisk trade during lunch, where it's famous for its irregularly shaped homemade muffins and for its gourmet salads, such as the tangy couscous salad with pumpkin, snow peas and heaps of mint. The all-day breakfast is also a big draw, with highlights consisting of banana and caramel pancakes, a breakfast burrito and the impressively compiled 'brekkie stack': a potato fritter topped with grilled tomatoes, basil, bacon, grilled haloumi, spinach, housemade relish and a poached egg. The cafe's name seems to have been partly inspired by one of the heritage building's exposed walls, revealing the original plaster, now coloured a faded green. You'll also find quality Illy coffee and a wide array of housemade baked goods and desserts, from old-fashioned sponges to fresh muffins and forest cakes.

Sensational food and worth the squeeze!
The space in this cafe is limited and its often a tight squeeze to get through. Table space is pounced upon and no guarantee. The staff are energetic and enthusiastic and management are friendly and approachable.
But the food....
I'm a bit of a foodie and this would rate up there with some of the best fine dining meals I've had! The breakfasts are generous, the soup more-ish and their salads varied and unusual. The cakes are served in enormous portions and you still find you can't bear to leave the slightest smear on your place. Their quiches are divine and the muffins are my favourite treat. I love coming in on a cold morning and buying a savoury muffin fresh from the oven... melt in the mouth!

A favourite for breakfast
I've been going here for ages and always just called it "Illy" - as the last post suggests, the name isn't easy to spot. As well as the breakfast burrito, the breakfast stack is awesome, actually everything on the menu is pretty good (I've tried most). Friendly staff, great coffee, nice atmosphere - and with all the papers and books it's also a good place for a solo visit.

Worth the search!
I'd suggest management of the Green Refectory enroll in "SIGNAGE 101", except that the difficulty of actually locating this place hasn't seemed to affected its popularity one iota. Amazing coffee coupled with equally amazing food (try the breakfast burrito - it's to die for)against a backdrop of quaint mismatched furniture and exposed brick walls. There's also a sunlight courtyard sporting some haphazard outdoor seating options. The business of the place means that service can suffer a little in terms of timeliness, but friendliness and menu knowledge ooze from the place. This is now a regular haunt for us - highly recommended! :)

Always good
I have just moved to Brunswick and am always on the search for the best cafe. I still keep coming back to the 'Green' when I want excellent service, delicious, fresh food, great coffee and a place to just get away from it all. Little courtyard out the back or sit at the communal table and read the paper. Spinach triangles or saugage rolls are a bargain or go the full meal - lasagne was fantastic. Always good and will always keep me coming back for more.

Sunday brunch
Nice place to have Sunday brunch after a big Saturday night out. The staff are friendly and it's a nice cozy atmosphere to have a coffee, some food and a read of the newspaper.
