The Ginger Room

Deep inside the hallowed halls of Canberra's Old Parliament House, what once was the private Members' dining room has been transformed into a fine dining experience. Though it may be hard to find, the effort is worth it, with chef Janet Jeffs cleverly fusing sophisticated mod-Oz ideas with Vietnamese and French cuisine. Backed up by a great wine list, the seasonal menu changes each month to take advantage of the best produce available. A generous set price menu will let you indulge in delights such as the rare roasted kangaroo rice paper rolls with beetroot and watercress salad or a main of rabbit confit with pumpkin, spinach, thyme and sweet roasted garlic. Top it all off with a vanilla creme brulee and strawberry salad.

Nice Evening Out
Had a late dinner at this restaurant. Enjoyed the meal very much but a special part of the evening for me was the cheese board and being told about the cheeses on offer, the origin, uses, characteristics etc. My partner also really enjoyed his souffle and when offered a small taste of it, I could see why.

The service was very attentive and friendly.

The wine list was extensive.

Good for business meals, groups and celebrations. Lovely/interesting location.

Nice but not outstanding
The first time I ate at Ginger Room I was blown away, however the more times I returned, the more the quality of the dishes deteriorated. This was disappointing and embarrassing given the most recent time I went was for a birthday dinner I had organised for my partner and his family.

I was reminded of this last night when a terrible ad for ginger catering came on the television. No way to attract new customers!

A good night at the Ginger room
Decided to go the Ginger room after reading many reviews about it. A bit hard to find at first go as the entrance is at the back of OPH. Once we found the entrance it was ok. On first entry, the room had a funny smell. I think renovations are occurring in OPH which was where the smell was coming from.

We decided upon a 3 course meal. I had the quail and veal for entree and main. Both were of good quality. My mousse desert washed down by a De Bortoli Noble one was the highlight for me.

My wife had the lobster ravioli and requested the trout entree as the main. The trout wasn't that great to write home about.

Wine list is very good. A huge selection to choose from and also plenty of good quality wines by the glass.

Would go back to the Ginger room again. Up there with the best that Canberra has to offer.

Cooking Seafood
A party of 6 dined in the Ginger Room for a family celebration that necessitated most to travel from interstate. Despite the foul weather, the dining experience was most pleasurable except for the seafood.

Being a seafood loving family we were tempted by the fare offered. However, at 7.30 pm Oysters were off the menu. The entree of octopus was barely warm and as such just a shade over raw.

For mains, four of the party selected "pan fried whiting fillet" which when it arrived bared little resemblance to cooked fish. The fillet had been folded and some sort of heat introduced without colouring the flesh, as in frying. The inside of the fillet was raw flesh. Whilst the staff were most obliging in returning the fish to the kitchen to "cook" the fillet to a more edible state, it took two tries in one case to get it right.

The rest of the meal was great, the sweets to die for, with the crowning glory being the peanut/dark chocolate pie and the stuffed dates.

Shan't be coming back to this restaurant when next we visit the ACT, unless we just want sweets!

Best food I have eaten in a long time
I travel the world for work and spend several times a year visiting Canberra. Until recently I have found Canberra eateries very ordinary but The Ginger Room was the highlight of my trip this year. The food was magnificant as well as the service. This will be the only restuarant I dine at from now on when visiting the ACT.

No degustation
We came here specifically to get the degustation menu. BUT it had not on the menu for as long as the waiter had been working there! Unfortunately you cannot trust what you read on NineMSN Restaurant Guide. We should've confirmed with the restaurant. Anyway, the rare tuna might have been a little too cooked, but the rest of the food was wonderful and I would certainly recommend the Ginger Room to others.

Interesting place to dine
I decided I had better dine at this place because of all their awards. Service was very good and could not fault the wait staff, however my dish was dry and tasteless. I could easily forgive, but my dinner guests said much the same. What a shame, this award-winning restaurant needs to up the ante in the kitchen stakes!
