If you remember a scene from Wall Street in which Michael Douglas is sitting at a famous restaurant near his office block, you may be interested to know that the restaurant's chef is the very same that works here at the French Brasserie. The motto is simple: good food and good service at an affordable price and the venue delivers on all accounts. When you do visit, be sure to sample the jaffa souffle. A rich combination of orange, Cointreau and chocolate, it is wickedly decadent - although it still goes straight to your hips.

Service that makes you feel special
My friends and I were wandering Flinders Lane for somewhere to go on a rainy Saturday night. A nearby restaurant that was full recommended we go to The French Brasserie. It turned out to be one of those nights where everything goes right!
This place is one of Melbourne's hidden gems, the kind of laneway experience that you want to take interstate or overseas visitors to have. The interior is stylish and comfortable, and surprisingly cosy for such a large space. You look out onto a nondescript laneway, but the warmth of the atmosphere inside has you looking inwards anyway. Once we settled, we found ourselves feeling very comfortable very quickly.
Hadj, the proprietor, met us at the door and continued to chat with us during the night. He was fun and delightful company! Every waiter we spoke to was just so lovely too and very, very knowledgable. We felt like we were being very spoilt. We only had time to have mains and some drinks (we had more plans) but wished we could have stayed to have some of the amazing looking desserts pass our table.
Our meals were so wonderful, conversation stopped! My friends both had the Bouillabaisse, which they said was just amazing. I had the Filet de b uf which was a Yearling eye fillet, with potato fondant, sauteed spinach, 'Fourme d'Ambert' mousse. We shared the delicious French fries, which I liked to dip into my mousse occasionally. Serving sizes were great, presentation careful and appealing. From the presentation of our drinks to our food, it was easy to see that this restaurant not only puts emphasis on the aesthetics of the space, but also the meals. It was a shame to finish such enjoyable meals!
I've got to admit, I have probably passed this restaurant before and not really checked it out, tucked away as it is down Malthouse Lane, but I will absolutely be returning many more times. Hadj has a great staff and a great vibe going on here. See for yourself! Thank you Hadj and everyone at The French Brasserie for making our night memorable.
