The Fitz

Wide, rustic bamboo-threaded lampshades adorn the ceilings of The Fitz, illuminating the blackboard of specials. Padded seats with baby cushions line the edge of the restaurant, which is where most people head to while they wait for their coffee. Here you can peer out of the large, scantily clad window where you'll see the Brunswick Street crowds passing. You can also try for the restaurant's spacious, luxurious terrace where, on a fine day, you may have trouble snagging a seat.

The Fitz does a great breakfast - they've got classic bacon and eggs with thick, warm sourdough, and muesli, muffins and toast too - but as soon as lunchtime ticks over, the groove shifts to gourmet and the service becomes a little more serious. For something local, order the pan-seared kangaroo fillet with spring onion mash and pesto-crusted eggplant. Otherwise, The Fitz does a mean Peking duck, and the seafood linguine won't linger long on anyone's plate.

Very Beat Nikky kind of place with bizarre but tasty food, my boyfriend had the kangaroo steak and I had the lamb salad very nice, bit pricey but ok compared to the $35 dollar hamburger at the hotel unbelievable!!!!!

Solid
Have been for dinner a couple of times, some nice innovations and great use of interesting ingredients (there's always roo on the menu)

VERY disappointing wine list: pay $30 for a bottle of Massoni Homes '01 pinot (really nice, well-balanced wine)... which I also buy at a discount wine place for less than $5 per bottle.

Selling no-name, discount wines for normal wine prices is not classy at all, especially when the food is good and the restaurant civilised.

Came back too many times to remember
I first came here after New Year's Eve 2000, have been a regular nearly weekly, have tried a number of meals from breakfast to dinner all have been excellent, desserts are my favourite. They have a very innovative chef his latest is Frangelico Mousse.

Pleasantly surprised
We arrived unannounced and were accommodated after a very short wait. During this time we were able to have a drink and wait outside, as we are smokers so this worked very well for us.

We ordered the provincial risotto - delicious and very generous with the prawns. The veal tortellini, very tasty even if a little bit too al dente. The gnocchi - yummy, perfect balance of blue cheese and cream.

The prices were very reasonable and the service was friendly and very accommodating. I would certainly go back again.
