The Old Fire Station Cafe and Gallery has long been the great bastion for the arts in Preston, featuring live music and comedy nights in its courtyard/beer garden dining space. With comfy couches sprawled out on to the footpath from the gutted raw red brick building (that did indeed house an old fire station), locals clamour to enjoy all-day breakfast, lunch and late dinners on Friday. As the name suggests, the cafe is also a fully functional gallery space, so the wall decor is constantly changing. Table settings are retro diner-style with a pleasingly mismatched chair and table collection lending the vibe of an intriguing share-house lounge room - minus the amateur cooking!
Breakfast specialties include the fireman's feast (a whopper of bacon, mushroom, tomatoes with Boston beans on toast), but for a real heart-stopper, try The King. No doubt that this ones named after Elvis: a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich topped with bacon and honey. Toasted sandwiches, roast vegies and grilled melts, salads, pasta, Asian platters and zelnec (spinach and fetta filo rolls) complete the menu with a multicultural flavour. A deli display packed with overflowing cookie jars, wheat-free muffins, choc slices, and a fair wine list, spirits, bottled beers, mixers and champagne means there's something here to satisfy at anyone at any time of day.
