The Fern is another huge step forward in the gentrification of Redfern. First off, Eat House Diner gave locals somewhere to enjoy some dinner. The Norfolk, despite clinging precariously to the Surry Hills postcode, is all but in the middle of Redfern and more than takes care of the sticky where-to-drink question (not to mention cheap tacos). Finally, thanks to a bunch of ex-Merivale alumni Redfern has its very own "it" cafe.
Proffering delicious brekkie (buttermilk pancakes, or The Fernivore big brekkie among the highlights) and a smart list of dishes come lunch, the Fern's menu comes courtesy of former Uccello head chef Massimo Bianchi. It's no surprise then that the fare here has quite obvious Mediterranean tendencies, without falling completely into the category of straight up Italian food.
And just when you thought this funky little converted terrace couldn't get any better, wait with baited breath for the pending liquor license to be approved and the Fern to keep its doors open into the night.
