Coffee with a conscience is what The Fair Trade Coffee Company does best in its humble home of Glebe Point Road, near the Glebe markets. Popular with the local student population and ethical food lovers, this good-natured cafe is owned by independent humanitarian organisation Palms, with proceeds going towards volunteer aid placements in countries such as Timor-Leste (East Timor), Papua New Guinea and Kenya.
It prides itself on providing certified fair trade coffees and teas, along with a contemporary Australian cafe style menu that, like the beverages, is inflected with international flavours and organic ingredients. The big breakfasts are especially enticing, mixing organic eggs with toast, fruit salads, muesli and a whole lot more. Later in the day, the cuisine gets more global with such highlights as the Moroccan meatballs, nasi goreng and Italian pastas.
This local hangout also creates its own global village with its principled premise and its range of community-building events, including philosophy nights, poetry reading, stand-up comedy and live music.
