The European's narrow dining room has a distinct Parisian ambience. Bistro chairs, wood panelling and a black-and-white chequered floor set the tone for what will be a thoroughly Euro-chic experience. Continental fare might range from spanakopita to scotch fillet and bearnaise, but The European's highest accolades come from more innovative fare. The wine list is a highlight, strictly including only European wines. Luckily, the staff are familiar with them all (even if the customers aren't) and can recommend the perfect glass to go with your meal.

Breakfast Buzz
Stepping through the heavy wooden and glass door at The European feels like entering my grandfather s library. This cafe exudes a peaceful old-world charm that is expected from its location at the top end of Melbourne and opposite Parliament House.
We arrived at 7:30am on a weekday and the place was already buzzing. Our waitress seated us promptly and took our coffee orders which were bought out in a matter of moments. Our meal order took a bit longer. The coffee is passable. Not to get excited about but gives you the morning hit without a bitter after taste. We had the Bircher Muesli and Croque Monsieur both of which were generous in size. The gruyere cheese and mustard were delicious, nice sharp taste and fantastically fresh.
We definitely enjoyed our breakfast and experience at The European and are likely to come back. It would be great to see this place in action during brunch!

Nice, but over-rated
I took my girlfriend there on our first date, and I have to say, I was disappointed. The food sounded nice on the menue but was 'plain' when presented.
Service was good. It was busy at the time so i don't really have much of a problem with that. The rest of the place and the beers was good but i doubt I'll be back.
We had the snapper and rissotto but neither of us could stomach finishing our meals.

Croque Monsieur Heaven
The Croque Monsieur is clearly the outstanding brunch dish at this place. Don't try and attempt to share it with someone (as I have done so before- it only ends in tears)
The coffee is beautiful, however the service is a little bit wishy-washy (depending on the day you go there)

Quite simply the best brunch in Melb
I love the European any time of day but brunch is best on a sunny Sunday sitting out front. Staff are brilliant, especially with unruly toddlers. Highly recommended, even for small kids. Doesn't matter if they don't eat their food & juice - just means there's more for me!

Waiter was fabulous, as was the food
With two foodie visitors from Sydney we arrived with much anticipation for our Saturday dinner at 8pm. Hopes dashed! The reservation was found to be missing, but no matter: an amazing waiter handled it superbly and made us feel so welcome and cared for at an outside table. Complimentary champagne quickly put the inconvenience behind us. The waiter was the consummate professional and really helped make the meal an event not to be forgotten: recommending dishes, checking back in with the kitchen to confirm suspected ingredients, and sharing our enthusiasm, all in his low-key relaxed manner. The food was outstanding. We particularly enjoyed a fresh buffalo mozzarella platter with basil, tomoatoes and sourdough slices, accompanied by a small dish of salt and a vial of olive oil. The Italian coleslaw was also a highlight, with a light tang from the raddishes and lemon tempered with the surprising inclusion of parmesan. Finishing up with a tour of the Supper Club upstairs with its fabulous view, we couldn't have asked for a better time. Thanks for a lovely night!

Amazing
Well, seeing we live in Melbourne and have never been here before I feel we have missed out on years of a sensational dining experience. The meals were just amazing, the service was outstanding and we all throughly enjoyed our night out. The only downfall was the wines. hey were a little more than we wanted to spend. The cheapest was $45, which was unfortunate as we would have ordered more and stayed longer had they been more reasonable. Apart from that, a restaurant certainly worth the visit.

My boyfriend and I visited the European during a weekend visit to Melbourne. The food was delicious and well presented, my venison was good but my partner's beef dish was apparently the best he has ever had. The wine was expertly matched to our meals. Indeed, the service at the European was superb, we can't speak of this place highly enough. A table at the Supper Club upstairs, reserved by the wonderful staff, for digestivi rounded off a wonderful, hard-to-forget culinary experience.
