The Estelle

Versatility is the name of the game in the bar world nowadays. You've got to do coffees and cocktails and breakfasts and beers; whatever the punters want. Luckily, the Estelle Bar & Kitchen sets out to do just that, mixing a retro cafe vibe with a trendy bar aesthetic, and offering a whole host of gustatory sensations to be had between these art deco-tiled walls. Boutique wines, cocktails and beers aside, the Estelle does all-day brekkies for late starters, and an always-changing menu of modern Australian tapas and share food featuring cold meats, steaks, fish and vegies.

Worth the trip to Northcote
We had the 5 course degustation with matching wines - a great way to try many wonderful dishes and with some fine wines and still be in great shape for work the next day. The service was very friendly and welcoming and the staff were genuinely happy to share the food they had prepared with you. Every course was interesting to the eye and the palate and each was quite different from the previous and finshed off nicely dessert and great coffee. Our friends enjoyed our the Estelle as well, no doubt we will all return.

What a great experience
MMy husband and I dined at The Estelle today. Even though we live not too far away, we rarely eat in Northcote. After making the booking we nearly cancelled it to return to one of our favourite Sunday establishments in Fitzroy. However, I had read some online reviews as well as a recent write up in the Epicure, so thought we would give it a go. It was absolutely fabulous. The atmosphere was great and service faultless. It is decorated with retro type decor which was beautifully complimented by our waiter who knew his stuff. There was an eclectic mix of background music which you found yourself having a little foot tap under the table to and it just had a great vibe. We both commented on the atmosphere and the fact that from the minute we walked in it just felt "right".

We had the 7 course degustation menu and that was because it was 2pm and we were starving. We had conducted a little research and there were a couple of reviews that commented on the small sizes of the servings and that some had felt hungry when they left. So we thought if we order the 7 course we should be fine. An understatement! We waddled out of there. It is now 9pm and my husband has just said "that was seriously great food we ate today".

My standouts were (everything) the king fish with dhal, Rhubarb with musk and a dish that had risoni, chorizo and mussels which I could have eaten a bucket of. However we also had the Charcuterie Board to start with which was fabulous and on it was the Parfait. It was to die for and both of us quietly fought for it.

When we left a lady came in, tied her dog up out the front, ordered a coffee and pulled out a book to read while a small crowd sat around the bar having snacks. Brilliant!

If we had to deduct points it was a struggle. We decided it was a little cold (as in chilly) and the music was a little loud for our old ears. Wine was a little expensive but a refreshing international offering.

We will be back!
