The Deck

The Deck has a strong and steady reputation as a fine modern European eatery, having successfully ambled along at its Yarra-side location since 1999. As the name implies, the outdoor dining is a highlight, boasting distinctly Melbourne views through the trees of the languidly flowing Yarra River. Inside, the space is decked out in semi-formal, brasserie-style decor with warm red-hued walls, timber and celebrity-smile white linen. The contemporary menu has a dominantly European flavour, ranging from a Meredith feta and leek tart with beetroot chutney; to a duck risotto with mushroom and chestnuts.

Loose plank?
After having to cancel twice before (for personal reasons) we finally made it to The Deck for dinner. For each of the previous occassions I had received a call to confirm our booking, however on this occasion it didn't happen. When I rang the person seemed surprised that I was calling to confirm the booking.
I had made the booking a week in advance & they accepted my request for a balcony table. When we arrived we were seated at a table on the balcony which had obviously been added to the normal configuration & resulted in myself sitting cheek & jowl beside a diner on another table (we would have prefered to be told no balcony tables were available & to be seated inside).
When it came time to order, our waiter was extremely aloof, to the point of pursing her lips everytime we had a request.
Drinks & meals were ordered & then we waited with a glass of wine but no bread for 30 mins before a starter of olives (warm), pecorino cheese & mustard fruits plus 3 oysters were served.
By this stage our glasses were empty. Assuming there would be a wait b/n courses I ordered my partner another glass of wine, only to have the mains arrive shortly after.
The food quality was good, but not memorable & the wine offering by the glass of a high quality.
In summary the visit was ok, but some adjustments are reqd to bring experience up to a level to match the view & please ditch the pursed lips - remember we are the customers.

Family party beautifully catered for
Our small party of seven were thrilled with all aspects of this special occasion, our son's 21st birthday. From being seated on the balcony overlooking the river to the cordial farewell we couldn't fault The Deck. The food was sublime and the prices reasonable. Our waiter was exceptional. We could easily chat to each other across the table yet there was an air of bon homie about the place. I would not hesitate in recommending this terrific restaurant.

Outstanding
This restaurant is a consistent performer. Great food, classy atmosphere and combined with exceptional service makes the Deck one of my favourite restaurants.

The ribeye steak and the crisp pork belly are must try have dishes. I also had a Campari cocktail which was fantastic.

The view from our table outside was stunning which enhanced our dining experience. Highly recommended.

Consistently the best!
The Deck provides consistent outstanding service and food. It is difficult to beat the professional, attentive, courteous and friendly service provided by Rob and Louisa and the team at The Deck. The relaxed, friendly atmosphere and pleasant location overlooking the river all enhance dinner at The Deck.
