The Deanery

The Deanery is all about the wine. If you have an extensive collection of your own you can store it in the Deanery's temperature- and light-controlled cellar, then call up a bottle to have with dinner. However, if a bottle or two of vintage grange isn't part of your cellar, the Deanery has a wine list few establishments can rival, and it is well-worth an in-depth perusal.

The food on offer at the Deanery is best described as modern cuisine with a respectful nod to most major schools of cooking. A charcuterie plate (topped off by an achingly good and devilishly small serve of jamon serrano) will plant your feet firmly in the Mediterranean before a duck pie with celeriac puree and preserved mushrooms may have you thinking you are in Baroque times - a thought which the brass-studded leather chairs and heavy wooden tables will do little to rectify.

Conversely, the steamed pork buns "inspired by Momofuku" will either have you feeling as though you are on a street in Manhattan or Shanghai, depending on your familiarity with the original. The soft texture and balanced flavours make them an admirable attempt at one of David Chang's masterpieces and a lot cheaper than flying to New York. Wherever your tastebuds land, the food is sure to be of the highest quality and, like a fine bottle of wine, is worth enjoying among friends.

Loved it
Hands down one of the best nights out I've ever had. The service is outstanding - the lady greeting us was very friendly, and our waiter had extremely in-depth knowledge on both the food and the wine. He was also very helpful in explaining the menu (there were some terms I was not familiar with before) and the background of the food, without making me feel like an idiot for asking! The food itself was delicious - I had the duck pie (the pastry was buttery and golden, not at all soggy or burnt on the bottom, and the meat was so flavourful and tender), while my partner had the grass-fed skirt steak, medium rare, of which he said the only better one he'd ever had was in Argentina! I was not drinking on this occasion, but the partner was very impressed with the selection of alcohol on offer, and the suggestions made by our waiter were spot-on every time.

The only downside of the night was that it was a little loud for a couple dining together, however that really didn't affect the night for us much, as everything else was fantastic! The portion sizes were perfect (the menu has small, medium and main sized sections)and the desserts were perfectly made.

Will definitely be returning here with a larger group, as I would love to try their sharing dishes next time.

Very disappointed
We had booked the Deanery for a work function for 50 people and paid the required deposit. With a week to go, they have cancelled our booking without consultation, leaving us to find an alternative venue at short notice.

Not happy! Very poor customer service.

Interesting combinations
I had heard many wonderful things about the team at Interlude, unfortunately I didn't get the chance to go before they closed. When I heard the team was back together at The Deanery I took my second chance greedily.
The upstairs restaurant is decorated in dark tones with lovely floral accents to counter the masculine furniture. It was very quiet when we went so the staff were always at the ready. The dishes were on the small side of a degustation and whilst I left nicely full my hubby wished he had eaten more meat. My vegetarian degustation was inventive and the winner for me was a cheddar veloute (which hubby loved as well). Overall the food is quite nice as well as the staff, we will probably return for the al a carte.

Conference dinner - winner
I organised a conference dinner with 25 work colleagues and clients. The brief was that it had to be 'Melbourne' and it had to be 'memorable'. The Deanery fit both these requirements. First, The Deanery is down a laneway, off a laneway, which is as 'Melbourne' as it gets. We started the evening with pre-dinner drinks and the extensive wine list catered to our large group well. We then moved upstairs to the mezzanine, our group had to be split into two tables, though I'm sure one extra large table could be organised with enough warning. The tables and chairs were antique in feel and there is an exposed wine cellar through a glass window that spans the back wall. We chose the 3 course set menu ($75 per head as at April 2008). Food has a Middle Eastern twist, lots of dukkah and chermoula and the like. I had lamb cutlets with a lentil and tabouli-like salad and minted yoghurt for entree, eye fillet steak with kipfler potatos and roast red capsicum for main and a peach and mango creme brulee for dessert. It was cooked beautifully and came out quite quickly considering the size of our group. The service was knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. I recommend booking well in advance if you have a large group, such as ours. The Deanery would also be suitable for an indulgent dinner out for two. The night was enjoyable and memorable, highly recommended.

A hidden treasure
I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem when invited to dine with friends recently. I can't remember the last time I have enjoyed a meal this much. The menu selection was fantastic, flavours amazing and everything exceptionally well priced. I could not have asked for more from the wait staff, who were attentive and suggested some great wine matches to accompany the sublime food. The only down side: It was hard to leave the table, as I was so full (the portions are very generous!). Highly recommended.
