The Cyclone Cafe is tucked away in the inner-city suburb of Parap, which is best known for its weekly open-air markets, but is also the home of this little gem of a cafe. The unassuming corrugated iron exterior (which looks as though it blew in on the last storm) gives way to a comfortable and rustic interior, intimate tables and tempting dishes. There are local artworks on the walls, all of which are for sale, and the smell of strong rich coffee invades the senses as soon as you walk in.
Owner Vincent Selwood, like all of his staff, has a friendly and open manner, relaxed yet efficient. The cafe is buzzing on a Saturday morning, and the beautiful old coffee machine hums steadily. Selwood's commitment to quality coffee is unmistakable and there is a wide selection from which to choose. The menu has everything from sandwiches, all made fresh to order; hot dishes, including the cafe's signature steak sandwich; and of course hearty all-day breakfasts of eggs, bacon, sausages and thick-cut toast. If you're after a sweet fix to go with your latte or peppermint tea, try one of the homemade cakes. On a Saturday, you can always pick up a coffee to go and wander around the markets.
