Popular with Adelaide's French ex-pats (always a reassuring sign) this simple yet elegant bistro has enough Gallic touches to convince you of its authenticity, without collapsing in a heap of cliches. There are travel posters and maps adorning the walls, and a mezzanine area that can be cordoned off for private groups. The bread is baked in-house and the food is classically simple - relying heavily on owner/chef Vic Larosa's early training as a butcher. From pork fillets in a prune and brandy sauce, to a skirt steak with a red wine and eschalot sauce, and a porterhouse steak with peppercorn and blue vein cheese, all the sauces are made in the pan where the meat was cooked. The blackboard specials change regularly, and the concise wine list is fractionally more French than Aussie, with a handful of other international wines.

Among Adelaide's best
I can only venture to guess that someone called in sick when the other reviewer had a "disappointing evening", as our experience was the polar opposite. The service was really friendly and even if the food were to take a little time (which it didn't - quite fast) it wouldn't bother me in the slightest as the cosy little restaurant tucked away from the bustle of Hindley Street is imbued with charm and comfort. Food was simple but delicious - that real hearty home cooked feel. Closest I've had to the real thing and now our new favourite restaurant.

Welcome to Paris
Arrived without a booking on a Friday night. No problem, shown upstairs, had the mezzanine to ourselves (large party arrived after 9pm and we were warned they'd be noisy but we were finished by then). We enjoyed the food, steak for one and venison for the other. Beautifully simply prepared. Wine list excellent, chose Ashton Hills Pinot, enjoyed a very special night and our young french waiter was excellent. Would recommend to anyone.

Merci La France!
Relived our time in France this night. Food was great: venison steak with red wine sauce, tarragon chicken en dessert favorite 'tarte au citron'. Service was very friendly and efficient. Good wine suggestions; we drank a nice bottle of cote du Rhone. Merci!

A disappointing evening
We waited an hour and a half for our main course to arrive, only to be greeted by a tasteless steak and a pathetic attempt at a sauce. The table next to us left before their mains arrive, fed up from waiting over an hour for their food as well. Service was extremely slow, even at picking up the tab. Overall, a wasted evening of time, money and energy. A definite no.

A reminder of Paris
I had my birthday dinner here with an intimate group of friends. The service we received was very friendly and a pleasure to see smiles on faces.
The food was amazing (I had the veal) and the wine selection seemed picked to compliment the food. We chose one of the Australian reds.
I will definitely revisit - and as a smaller cozier restaurant with a definite French atmosphere (reminded me of my recent trip to Paris), I look forward to bringing a date for an intimate dinner for the next visit.
As a famous Aussie used to say: Do yourself a favour! (Thanks chef and staff of The Corner Bistrot for a pleasurable night). TroyS

1-2-3, The Corner Bistro for me!
Staff were friendly and accomodating, food was simple but so, so flavoursome and the cheese - ohhhh, the cheese! As a bonus, the chef pays a visit to each table after dinner and is sincere in his approach. Wine list was a bit off-centre. All-in-all, tres bien! A definite 'return-to' restaurant.
