One of the latest additions to WA's booming brew-pub industry, The Colonial Brewing Co. of Margaret River has positioned itself as a unique experience for the whole family, not just beer-swilling blokes bent on a bender. There are still plenty of opportunities for Dad to partake in a few pints while the kids are entertaining themselves in the South West's largest adventure playground and Mum relaxes with a glass or two of local wine.
Behind a faux colonial-style corrugated iron exterior is an ultra-modern establishment with a distinctly industrial and yet relaxed vibe. Out the back is a huge beer garden, which can seat up to 350 people, and inside you can watch the fine ales brewing while you tuck into beer-friendly fare like beer battered fish. The 'bill o' fare' offers sticky buffalo wings and the hearty seared porterhouse steak sandwich with grilled mushrooms and caramelised onions. For the kids, there are hot dogs, nuggets and burgers, together with an array of sweet sensations, including freshly baked cakes for little and big kids alike.

Vastly overated
We travelled to the brewery on the premise that Freya Hanly would be performing between 2-5pm. On arriving we find due to a booking error a different act is playing. We decide to lunch anyway, we ordered some beer a bottle of mad dog red a steak burger and Duck cakes. The Burger with chips was $27(not cheap) the Duck cakes tasteless and the wine awful, the beer was the saving grace.($100 in all) I cannot recommend the colonial brewery as a good experience, there are far better places in the Margaret River locale that offer more variety and at a more reasonable price. We will not be returning and we will not be recommending it to our friends.

Still waiting to order food
A group of 8 of us strolled in to Colonial Brewery for a late lunch. (2pm). The bar and restaurnat were busy and we were absolutely starving and quoting that "Colonial Brewery have the 2nd best steak sandwich in WA".
When we went to order some food and drinks we were all rudely informed that the kitchen was closed, for 15 minutes. Stunned and confused we asked if we could place orders and again it was a no - the kitchen is closed. We grabbed a few drinks and and waited for 15 minutes. Watching meals go by and more customers trying to order, we were wondering when can we at least order some food, all of us are happy to wait as we were enjoying our drinks. After numerous trips to the bar it was another 15 minutes...and so on.
Then after one hour they appeared to be taking orders again. There was now one massive line. We get to the front of the line and they closed the kitchen again! it was now 3:30 and of course the kitchen closes at 4:00pm.
We finished are drinks and as I walked out I briefly spoke with one of the staff members to clarify this ridiculous system of closing the kitchen. She basically said, were we supposed to tell you when you could order? That capped off a great Saturday afternoon and all 8 hungry customers vowed never to return to Colonial Brewery and to make sure we tell every person we know of our confusing situation. There are far too many quality establishments in Margaret River area and no one should ever have to go through this debacle of a situation.

Lovely food, too many flies
The chicken wings are exceptionally good. Fish & chips was decent. Service is friendly and helpful. There were so many flies. They seriously need to fix this problem.
