The Book Kitchen take pains to emphasise their slow food philosophy, that is, serving food that is largely organic, carefully produced and artfully presented. As a result, you may have to wait for such dishes as the blue swimmer crab cake with tomato, avocado and salsa verde; or the warm kipfler potato, lamb shank and herb salad, but the wait is certainly worthwhile. Nor will you be bored with an entire library of culinary volumes at your elbow. The dark wood tables are flanked by bookshelves packed with everything from musty old cookbooks in the original French to the latest glossy gastro-porn, and the friendly staff are happy for you to browse to your heart's content.

Go for the food, not the service.
I took a group of 4 to the Book Kitchen for Dinner on a saturday night. That atmosphere was great. My partner recommends the squid as a main and the Chicken Maryland was pretty tasty too from another account. I found the Duck was ever so slightly overpowered by the pepper and the bitterness of the rocket but still enjoyed.
So all in all a good experience if not for the drab, uninterested service we received. Would think twice before recommending for dinner if this is the benchmark for service. Go for the food and atmosphere, not for the service.

Amazing!
Went to the Book Kitchen for breakfast, and after a brief 5 minute wait for a table (always a good sign) we were ushered in. Fantastic coffee, the Spanish baked eggs (with chorizo, yum!) were super good and served with buttered toast, old school style. Loved it and definitely will be back there for another meal!

Upscale local eatery
My partner and I decided at the last minute on a Friday night to go out and grab a decent meal. We wanted a place that was relaxed and quiet. We'd heard good things about the Book Kitchen so gave it a go. Was a good experience, the service was excellent, food was tasty and well prepared.
We picked some seafood inspired entrees, crab ravioli and stuffed squid. Both were fresh and lovely. I went for the lamb special for main, which was well prepared but not exciting. My partner had the poached fish which had Asian flavours along with a creamy sauce. Had the "assiette" dessert (mixed plate), which was pleasant enough but nothing special.
Was a little on the pricey side, $29 for mains and $16 for entrees. All in all was an enjoyable experience.
