The Bond Store is named after the bluestone vaults of Customs House, where imported goods were historically held in bond until the customs duty had been paid. Occupying a gutted retro warehouse, it sets an appealing cafe scene, with stripped brick walls and flooring, high wooden ceilings and whirring fans.
Close to the hub of law firms and corporate HQs in the city's south, this is more than a coffee drop-in spot, drawing local business folk for quiet discussions over gourmet brekkies and lunches. Hungry suits can choose from such dishes as French toast with strawberries and creme fraiche; fruit salad with Greek yoghurt; orange-infused porridge; parmesan tortillas; or baked egg and sardine toasties.
Antique sugar pots, jazz music and the golden glow of low lamps lend this place a slightly formal, 1940s feel, but it's not all corporate lunches here. The Bond Store is just as likely to attract local workers for after-five drinks, or joggers looking to fuel up on muffins after a run along the riverbank.
