Relax and imbibe a cold drink or dine alfresco on the deck and take in the tranquil water views - maybe even spot a dolphin or two. This laidback community hub sits on the banks of the Port River and prides itself in serving quality meals. The bistro menu is broad and includes the full-bodied Big Birk Breakfast for morning starters, and specials such as the seafood plate and Mediterranean chicken breast for lunch. The tavern also has a number of regular specials available.

A really good local
We were on the way home and decided that instead of cooking, we'd stop into the Birkenhead because we've heard they do good pub meals.
We opted to sit on the deck and watch the lights twinkle over the water. Although it is on the deck, it's sheltered and was comfortable for a cold night.
The menu was extensive and we had a very difficult time in deciding what to order. We both (coincidentally) settled on the schnitzels - they don't have just the norm here - I ordered a Mexican topping. We were both absolutely thrilled with the size of our meals and they were delicious schnitzels. We also helped ourselves to the salad and veg bar.
This is a lovely clean hotel and was moderately busy, even for a Tuesday. The staff were lovely although I'm not a fan of the "line up at the bar and place your order". I do understand it's not a 5 star and that is the system that works there - i can imagine it gets very busy. However table service for ordering meals would add class to this place that I think it deserves. I did appreciate that we could leave our card with them when placing drinks orders, and keep the tab open.
The food cannot be faulted - we will be back.
