Bengal Tiger sits in the site once occupied by The Nelson Hotel back in the '80s. While the space has been decked out in the sort of fiery reds and yellows one imagines to be appropriate for an Indian eatery, this restaurant retains a touch of the dim, old-fashioned glamour of the hotel. The tandoor ovens dominate, cooking up meat, fish and naan, while the rest of the menu is dedicated to rich classic curries and unique creations such as the 'Bengal Tiger special' - chicken breasts stuffed with minced lamb and dried fruits, served with the house's special sauce.

Bad service
Since the last review was written in 2007, I should put my thoughts forward after dining there last night. One word, disappointing. The food was very average, as the curry in all three dishes we ordered tasted the same. The butter chicken was overly sweetened with sugar, and the service was absolutely unacceptable. When we walked in, our waiter was not accommodating at all.

Exceeding expectations
One of the better Indian restaurants we have been to in Melbourne. Very busy restaurant for a secluded location. We were told that the restaurant will be completing 25 years so our expectations were quite high. Really liked the display tandoor where we could see the smiling chef preparing our food. The waitstaff were excellent and made honest suggestions. The meals were prepared according to our taste. I am impressed. Definitely will go back again. Highly recommended.

I hadn't been to the Bengal Tiger for some time, but ordered a meal last week. It wasn't as sensational as I remembered, but still more than passable. The gosh-e-gosh (their take on rogan josh) was a sensation. Tandoori chicken was very different, almost like it was smoked. Naan bread was not cooked in the tandoor as I like. All in all, still very good and one on the few near Port Melbourne.
