What started as a trendy little gourmet goods retailer has since become a larger scale food and wine lovers' dream. While this Highgate haunt is still a great place to buy a rare cheese or fine wine, The Beaufort Street Merchant thrives on its newfound status as a tres chic brasserie, along with a kitchenware and bookshop across the road (COOK/book), and corporate delivery and gift hamper making services.
Given its extended opening hours, this eatery accommodates lazy latte-sippers on the lounges, boisterous breakfasters at the large wooden tables, and avid lunch and dinner regulars alike. The vibe might be casual, but the effort put it into the modern Australian menu is definitely considerable. Honourable offerings include the Spanish breakfast, featuring chorizo, homemade spicy bacon and onion beans, potato, eggs and mopping bread, as well as the Hollandaise-topped chicken and mushroom crepes with ricotta and spinach.
With bottle shop prices, the store's wines make for wonderful accompaniments to meals in the cafe (and they can be brought into the cafe to consume).
