While Tassie's beaches may not be as liberally decorated with svelte European backpackers as its northern neighbours, water views are still just as prized. The Beach boasts an enviable outlook over the rolling waves from the alfresco tables or through the big floor-to-ceiling windows. Aside from the views, this restaurant draws tourists and locals alike with a flexible menu of weekend brekkies, casual nibbles, fresh seafood and a few out-of-the-ordinary specials.

Could be brilliant if they pulled their socks up.
Have eaten here five times. This time was the least remarkable. Previously I've enjoyed tender steaks and moist duck legs at dinner time, and delicious eggs benedict for breakfast. Today I tried the woodfired pizza. The topping was good, the base was nice. It wasn't as great as my previous meals here, but it was far from sub-standard.
And look, there was nothing wrong with it, per-se, but it really wasn't what I was hoping for considering the wonderful food that I have had here before.
The service seems a little lack luster - maybe some older staff members might be good to invest in rather than saving $2 an hour on hiring junior waged staff? They were clumsy and bordered on rude. The seat where I was put was right next to the door, and every time someone walked in, the door would sit open, sending a horrible cold breeze down my neck. If a table is uncomfortable like that, perhaps it would be better not to have the table there at all? I'd rather move on to another place or wait for a better table than be seated in a drafty doorway on a Tasmanian winter's day.
This place should be solid gold. It has the view, the access to fresh ingredients from the Channel, it could be brilliant. But it's not. I'm hoping if I go back to be shown the full potential of this place, which at the moment left me cold - figuratively and literally.

On The Beach
They made a movie about the end of the world viewed from Melbourne once. This lunch showed me and my companion just how close the end of the restaurant world can be. We arrived on time for our reservation, there were only half a dozen other patrons so we were immediately seated at a good table overlooking the bay. Then we were abandoned for 25 minutes. The waitress eventually returned and gave us a pile of plastic coated menus, and a specials board. She made no recommendations and made no attempt to describe the specials, didn't attempt to take a drinks order, didn't smile or make eye contact, and left us to it for another 15 minutes. She returned with a bottle of cold water and took an order for a bottle of wine and told us "she'd be back" when we attempted to give her a food order. The wine turned up 10 minutes later when she took our food order. We'd been there for 45 minutes and had only just ordered. We waited a further 45 minutes for the food (2 simple salads). By this time it was time to go before we fell asleep from boredom. The bill took 20 minutes to arrive. The food wasn't bad but the service is slow.
