Making a stunning reinvention from an old local workman's pub into a chic modern gastro-pub, The Bay Hotel Bar & Grill, previously the Doctor Syntax Hotel, has whipped up a storm of excitement in Sandy Bay since it opened in April 2009. Combining that quintessential laidback feel of a local pub (featuring a beer garden and regular live music) with a modernised aesthetic (comfy lounges and mood lighting), this friendly venue brings artsy types, professionals and locals together to drink good beer, fine wine, and down some quality nosh. Indeed, the food is well above your average pub fare, under the helm of experienced chef Scott Butler. Fresh, seasonal, local and organic ingredients are used in the dining and bar menus, with standout dishes like the duck cassoulet tartlet, the wagyu beef burger, and the prawn and eggplant risotto. Wine connoisseurs will find various Tasmanian vintages proudly seated alongside French, German, Austrian, New Zealand and other key Aussie drops.

Christmas Party
We had our work Christmas Party here. 130 people. We were promised a large area partitioned off form the public and a DJ. We ordered 22 mixed platters of food. Firstly there were 40 people having dinner in 'our' area, which management apologised for but couldn't move. Secondly the DJ only started at about 1030 even though our party was 8pm until midnight. The platters had 95% spring rolls on them, the rest were similar items. None of the platters had sauce. Because of the mix of public and us, the atmosphere was terrible. We were also told we would be partitioned off from the public, yet this never happened. The DJ played dance music which was not Top 40 or popular music for the 1.5hrs left of the night. Very disappointing. I would not recommend The Bay to anyone for a function... Management said they would move the table as soon as the 40 people had finished dinner. This happened at about 11pm with only 1 hour of our party to go.
