The Avenue Foodstore is always busy - very busy - but luckily that doesn't affect the friendly service from charming staff in this upper-crust Albert Park corner-store-turned hip eatery. The original formica tables and lino floors seem to have been maintained, but the cuisine has evolved from old-style deli to gourmet mod-Oz cafe fare that entices a constant flow of customers for breakfasts of toast, fluffy muffins, croissants, moist Bircher muesli, crepes with poached fruit, omelettes and veg or meat-rich hot selections.
The lunch menu flirts with international flavours, offering beef and chicken burgers, soups, steak and pastas alongside a daily curry, risottos and salads. Top pick are the fresh toasted focaccias mainly known by their initials - such as the ABC or EHT. Frothy milkshakes and thickshakes are a popular order plus there's a decent wine list, as well as spirits and a selection of bottled beers on offer to accompany the meal.
