Chefs and Canberra natives David Black and Sam McGeechan have returned to the city they love to open their schmick new venture, the Artisan. Everything about this place oozes classic, simple sophistication, from the unclothed wood-grained tables and neutral tones to the classy long bar, open kitchen and mood lighting. The food too is a smart affair, with a genuinely innovative, fresh mod-Oz menu that could include blue eye cod with braised fennel, pommes Parisienne (that's potatoes for the uninitiated) and baby caper beurre noisette, or a braised rabbit vol-au-vent with beetroot carpaccio and broad beans. An impressive wine list - full of vintage and non-vintage, local and imported drops - and a classy vibe round off the experience to put this place at the top of Canberra's new hot list and be one to watch.
