The surroundings are simple, but that doesn't deter anyone from this extremely popular Thai restaurant. The servings are generous, the tastes are as authentic as it gets and it's great value, too.
Don't expect a quiet, romantic evening for two; this place hums with the hustle and bustle of Bangkok every night of the week. However, if you do brave the crowds, the chicken satays and beef rendang are sensational. Be warned, the main servings can be on the gargantuan side of things, so order conservatively unless leftovers are required for the next few days.

J from Carlton
Don't be put off by the terse service and language barrier, once you finally get your order taken, the meals take only mintes to come out, and they taste amazing.
I'm slowly making my way through the menu. For the money you pay, the food is well worth it. Even if the service sucks.
I definitely recommend sitting upstairs, too!

It's more Thai influenced than Thai food
Used to be a regular at this place when it first opened years ago and have recently re-discovered it. It's not changed one bit in all these years.
My girlfriend is Thai and I've spent a few years in Thailand and this is not authentic Thai food though not because of the similarity with Chinese stir fries. In fact lots of Thai food is Chinese influenced.
Having said that, it is still very delicious food and I love the fact that the vegies are so crisp and the flavours are so fresh. I would still fully recommend this place to anyone, just expect the flavours of Thailand but don't expect authentic Thai dishes.

This is not Thai food
A group of friends and I were really looking forward to this night out as we had all spent time together in Thailand. I do not know how this restaurant could call themselves thai food. We were offered the $18 a head thai banquet and my thai friend explained to the waitress that we wanted a taste of real thai food. What we got was three dishes with huge pieces of vegetables, different meats but they all tasted the same and it was more like a chinese stir fry than thai food. Very disappointing.

Great Food and Value
Authentic food and service. Had the Ginger Beef and Cashew Nuts and Yellow Curry. Both fantastic, Beef was had slight charcoal taste which was really good & authentic - as opposed being drowned in glossy sauces.
Highly recommend. Just remember its cash only. Also sit upstairs its nicer and warmer :)

'Pure taste with Thalia Thai'
Entering the restaurant I instantly envisioned the bad taste of take away Thai as patrons patiently waiting at the entrance for there packed and sealed dinners. To my surprise the kitchen was right at the front of house, which was quite unusual. However unorthodox the restaurant setting my seem, my first reaction was "the aromas are amazing" as the chefs cooked swiftly over the flames of the kitchen. Meeting some friends we decided to settle for some seating up stairs. We had never been there before we took it upon ourselves to direct ourselves to our own seats as the waiter seemed completely clueless on how to greet and seat patrons. Nevertheless we were given our menus within minutes allowing us to taste some of the appetizers. To start we could not go past the simple spring rolls and the chicken satay skewers. The chicken skewers were quite tasty as they had been crumbed giving them a crispy texture. However I was disappointed with the satay sauce as it seemed bought in bulk from the local supermarket. The spring rolls however had me quite confused, as the taste of lemongrass pro sided within. I was sure that they were massed produced frozen spring rolls but after biting into them they had the simple Thai flavours that you don't expect from frozen spring rolls.
As you do when eating Thai, we decided to have a selection of dishes. We ordered the Chicken yellow curry, the Pad Thai and the Beef stir fry with oyster sauce and of course some plain rice...After about 25 minutes or so the food arrived, and all at the same time which was a relief. The presentation of the food was sub par but I went there not expecting 5 star treatment of course. For me this meal was all about the flavours of Thai cooking, and after having dined in the best Thai restaurants in Melbourne I was not expecting any fireworks. A few bites of the Beef stir fry and it was evident that they had put far to much fish sauce and it seemed to over power the dish. The Pad Thai was just as disappointing, as the over use of bean sprouts spoilt the dish entirely....but then there was the chicken curry. With out a doubt is had to be one of the most flavoursome curries I have had in some time. It was creamy with the chicken cooked to perfection, the balance of flavours was executed so well.
There aren't many things that Thalia Thai would need to change to make a dining experience for it's patrons. Please oh please serve the rice in a bowl not a wine cooler!
It is no doubt that Thalia Thai is quite a good cheap eat, with the meal only coming to $20 dollars at the end of the night (not including drinks) between four of us. There is no doubt in my mind that I will return for that delicious yellow curry. But remember at the end of the day, 'you get what you pay for' and that phrase can definitely sum it all up when eating at Thalia Thai.

Fantastic food at fantastic value
Great food at great value! As a local, Thaila Thai is one of my favourite East Brunswick restaurants. The curries and stir-frys are great. They use tons of fresh veggies and the meat is good quality chicken breast or tender beef (none of this 'wilted bok choi with fatty chewy meat' nonsense that you often get at Thai places). The serves are huge (easy to share between 2 people) and cheap ($12 for a main that could serve 2).
The downside? It gets ridiculously packed, and there simply isn't enough room or serving staff. Go on a Friday or Saturday and you'll be lucky to get someone to take your order, much less bring you food. The staff are very friendly, but simply can't cope with the number of diners.
Your best bet is to order takeaway, and enjoy the tasty food & good prices without the less desirable atmoshphere.
