This Japanese cafe occupies a long narrow space with plain black tables and chairs. These minimalist furnishings aside, there is plenty to look at with walls hung with bamboo lattice, calligraphy-style paintings and an enormous abstract mural of a bustling streetscape. The open kitchen exposes the brisk movements of the chefs to ogling diners. The menu features a small selection of sushi and sashimi but (as advertised by the name) the menu is dominated by teppanyaki, with many varieties available. Those looking for something completely different ought to try the signature Japanese pizza.

Hidden potential
Heading into town for a matinee show on a Sunday and trying to find a cheap but good meal can be difficult. Teppansan is one of the few cheap Japanese eateries open on a Sunday lunchtime and being a short walk from the theatre, we decided to stop in for lunch. Although our miso soup arrived quickly upon sitting down and we didn't have to wait long to take our order, I haven't experienced such terrible service in a long time. We had to continually ask to have our plates cleared, for water etc etc. Each time we asked for something it seemed to be an imposition for the waitress who made it seem like she had other, more important tasks to attend to. In terms of food, there was plenty of it, especially for the price. Four of us heartily for $44 in total. The food was flavoursome enough though certainly not the best I have tasted. The sushi was a little dry, the spring rolls average. The highlight was the beef and seafood okonomiyakis - ample servings that we shared between the four of us, the only disappointment being the excessive amount of mayonnaise on top.

Gave this a try after reading great reviews online. We ordered the Japanese pizza set meal as it's rated highly with people who've had it from online reviews. Half an hour later, we've only been given our miso soup and softdrinks while other diners who've ordered after us were served first. We had to remind the waitress about our order. It arrived after 10 more minutes of waiting. We had to ask for our appetizers 3x more before it arrived, after we're 3/4 into our okonomiyaki. Terrible service, cheap but average food (which didn't taste anywhere like Japanese - menu was in Chinese, not Japanese).
