An outstanding restaurant
By any means, the Taxi Dining Room is an outstanding restaurant. The food, the service, the wine, the view were all excellent. This place now goes into my coveted top 5 restaurants in Melbourne, which is a big ask.
If I was to pick on anything negative, it would be the location on top of the animal house that is the Transport Hotel in Federation Square. A truly atrocious, vomitous and unruly crowd of young drunks that you have to make your way through to get into and out of the restaurant. Having to make your way through there certainly detracts from the whole experience.
Do not be put off though! Making up for it is the superb oasis on top that is Taxi. The food is truly outstanding (have I told you that already??). I started with the sticky pork with roasted sea scallops & hot chilli dressing, a sublime pork experience. Next was the Tempura nori wrapped flathead fillets which were to die for, the Japanese tartar was inspired, complementing the fish so well that you could not imagine eating the fish on its own. This was finished with the Mango & vanilla Trifle to top off a fantastic meal.
The wine list was extensive and very well laid-out in tabs with a good selection of new and old world. The service was very attentive (sometimes overly so) and the staff extremely pleasant.
My stars go out to this place, a must-do dining experience for Melbourne.

really disappointed
After planning all week where I should take an overseas visitor to give the best impression of Melbourne dining, I decided on Taxi. While the room was beautiful, and the service was competent (although intrusive at times), the food was really underwhelming. The gyoza lacked flavour, had soggy bottoms, and the wrapper was thick and claggy. Vietnamese salad that came with the pork hock was shockingly salty without any sweet, sour, or hot flavours to contrast. We had two entrees and two mains, which were pretty to look at but fell way short of delicious. Overall, memorable for none of the right reasons. Won't be going back.
