Flanked by sandstone edifices, the Sydney Mint is a historic highlight on the heritage stretch of Macquarie Street. There's not much coin created here anymore but there's plenty being spent, with the grand structure housing a maze of function spaces and, of course, the Sydney Mint Cafe. Here savvy city folk sit out on the sunny verandah and tuck into such gourmet lunches as black fig, gorgonzola and pear tart; twice-cooked pork belly on beetroot confit; or a simple and satisfying chicken club sandwich. Between 2pm and 4pm, the cafe offers high tea - a range of sweet and savoury nibbles teamed with loose-leaf tea or a naughty glass of bubbles.
