Sultan's Kitchen

With three locations around Brisbane, Sultan's Kitchen is a quarter-century-old success story. Marketing itself as a fine diner, the restaurant still remains warm and welcoming, with great-value meals. With an emphasis on authenticity, the menu features skillful renditions of Indian classics; spicy meats are served from the tandoori oven, while those who crave a good curry will be more than satisfied with a vindaloo or a lamb rogan josh. To mop up the last skerrick of sauce, there is an impressive selection of naan breads and roti.

A night to remember
I've just got back from the UK after spending 12 months on a working holiday - don't believe a word anyone tells you about Indian food being cheaper and better there.

We had a table of four on what appeared to be a moderately busy Wednesday night. We ordered four different starters but the waitress was kind enough to tell us (much to the chagrin of the management, no doubt) that we could get all we had ordered in a Sultans Mix for two at half the cost. The entrees arrived quicker than I expected and we were pleasantly surprised at the variety offered. The pakoras were delicious and crispy but a little lukewarm. We ordered five main meals, rice for four and a variety of four breads but the profit-slashing waitress was at it again. She politely told us that in her opinion we had ordered too much and that given the size of the main meals we should consider ordering less. We subsequently did and her advise was much appreciated. The mains took a little while coming considering that the restaurant wasn't overly busy but when they did arrive they were well worth the wait. The curries were flavoursome and thankfully not drenched in cream or food color as a lot of the restaurant food outside India is. In my opinion the beef vindaloo wasn't near hot enough but as I was told later they play it fairly cautiously and that we should specifically ask for it extra hot. The breads were special - hot and crispy and not doughy. The spinach and cheese naan is worth dying for. The prawn curry was outstanding, the prawns were fresh, large and crunchy.

We had a very pleasent evening that night and Brisbanites don't need to cringe - you have some very good Indian eateries on your doorstep.

As we were leaving the profit-slashing waitress thanked us for the generous tip we left her and apologised for the delay with our mains, aparently they do a brisk trade with takeaways and home deliveries and, while the restaurant may not look full, the kitchen is pumping at full capacity.

Not what I'm looking for in an Indian
First off I have to admit I've spent far too long in the UK and am missing the Friday night balti. I was recommended Sultan's by a Brit so thought I would give it a whirl. Sadly it was not what I was looking for. The meat was stewed - a UK curry is more of a quick stir-fry. We had a hard time distinguishing between three different curries by appearance - and sad to say by taste. The breads were also a disappointment. In my opinion, you can get the same standard for a quarter the price at any number of city lunch bars - and I don't eat at them either. We left food on the table - a first for us. The Sultan's might have been the thing 20 years ago but right now it is an attractive venue spoilt by poor product.
