The most recent addition to Surry Hills' flourishing Reservoir Street precinct, Sugarcane is the progeny of chefs and co-owners Kitsana Aunarerom and Milan Strbac. Situated round the corner from Elizabeth Street's hustle and bustle, this intimate space is decked out in warm neutrals, with cool mint highlights and an arresting array of platelet-shaped lights decorating the walls.
Having cut their teeth at some of Sydney's trendier Asian eateries, the duo returns to familiar territory here with a savvy, pan-Asian menu that caters to the area's lunchtime workers and after-five locals.
Pop in for a meal and start off with noteworthy spring rolls, followed by caramelised pork hock with snake beans; or crispy salmon with green papaya and peanut dressing. Stick around for something sweet and you may well be tempted by a dish of sticky black rice, topped with poached banana and coconut cream. If you're the indecisive type, they've got you covered too, with a six-course tasting menu spanning the best of what's on offer.

great food
The food was great at Sugarcane when we visited recently. Interesting choices and great flavours. The wine list had lots of choices, and the service was friendly. Will definitely return.
