With a garden of grass trees, a shady verandah, corrugated iron features, solid jarrah floors and a plethora of settler's memorabilia, the Stringy Bark Steakhouse is the epitome of all things Australian, right down to the 'Blokes' and 'Sheilas' signs on the dunny doors. The ambience is casual, the service is extremely friendly and the portions are generous, particularly in the case of the super-size rump steak. It weighs in at a whopping 800g and anyone who's piggy enough to polish the whole thing off - fries, salad, sauce and all - gets their name listed in the Carnivore Hall of Fame and placed into a monthly prize draw. However, you don't need an enormous appetite to tackle most of the tucker here. There's Cajun and coconut prawns with chilli mango dipping sauce; the ever-popular Kelly Kiev (named for Ned, of course); or try the Aussie bush caesar salad - a classic caesar with the unique taste of bush pepper. Little wonder then that Stringy Bark has won a string of awards for casual family dining.

LOVE IT
Wanneroo Tavern is great. Lunch at the Wanneroo is always best, Wednesdays with the steak or fish $12 special with chips is the best part of the week. I am a regular here and commend the food. Staff need to attend tables more often, but the food is great and pretty standard prices for portions. Wonderful steak always and the chicken with camembert is also fantastic.

No-nonsense dining
Food is limited but decent, staff need to pay attention rather than be flagged down, kids can be a pain running riot so avoid Tuesdays when it's Kids' Night. Monday is a good-value night and you don't get deafened by the daily entertainment. Two steak meals, a drink each cost less than $40. Plus the food is OK. Give it a go.
