Steel Bar & Grill is the latest brasserie to hit the Sydney CDB dining scene. Another creation by architect Michael McCann and the owners of Pony Dining, Steel is sexy and sleek with a touch of elegance.
Upon entering, diners are regaled with the sight of a 3000-bottle, backlit wine wall which complements the use of timber and glass throughout this stylish dining space. The kitchen itself is immersed in the centre of the restaurant to add some theatre to the dining experience and, with all the produce on show, there is certainly a sense of honesty behind the food.
The menu offers the best of land and sea for any time of day. From grilled meats prepared on a woodfired grill fuelled by ironbark to a pick from the live crustacean tank, highly acclaimed chef Damian Heads is sure to satisfy.
The restaurant is easily transformable for any function or special event. Steel also offers a private dining room that caters for up to 20 people, with its own private terrace and window to view the open-plan kitchen.

Pretty impressed
Just dined at Steel last night and really enjoyed it. The main of eye fillet steak was quite possibly the best I've ever had. The dessert menu was broad with many good options to choose from. The pavlova didn't disappoint. Service was just right and the ambience was great.

Steal
What a disappointment to a friday night. The last thing you want after a long week of work is... poor food poor service. I had the duck and apple spring roll where I saw nor tasted any resemblence of duck. After the entrees were cleared up, I watched in disappointment for 10-15 minutes at waitresses turning a blind eye to the empty plates on our table. Following that, our meal arrived another long wait later and was cold, mediocre and tasteless.
Thoroughly a disappointment.

Good but could be better
My first time at Steel and overall, although my tastebuds were impressed, I couldn't help but be left with a bad taste in my mouth with some aspects of the restaurant. Steel was by no means busy and it was quite dissapointing that we had to ask to see a menu after sitting there for over 45mins. Thankfully we werent in any rush to get back to the office, but given it was a lunch time sitting you'd think they would be more aware of those who are after a quick lunch.
When ordering it was quite dissapointing to find that the 'hand cut chips' weren't available with any other meal besides the sirloin, although the waitress confirmed that many people ask for them as a side. Im not sure why this policy is in existence but you'd think for paying customers they'd be willing to accomodate.
Those two issues aside, the food was great. The sirloin (yes i wanted the hand cut chips) was delightful. The atmosphere was non existent (would have to see it on a Thursday/Friday lunch or dinner), but the furniture and decoration was impressive and while having a modern and 'upmarket' feel to it, it still seemed quite relaxed.
Overall definitely worth a look, even if your after a drink and some tappas.

Just ok!
There wasn't much hype about the opening of Steel which was surprising. Being a fan of Pony I thought I would take my interstate guest there. I didn't make a booking but that didn't matter because there was half a dozen people in the restaurant..not a sole sitting outside and this was a SAT night. I was very surprised to see a number of dishes from Pony's menu which was very disappointing, you would think that the chef would have a list of dishes he would want to put on a new menu. The atmosphere...well.. there wasn't. I wouldn't recommend Steel over Pony.
