This popular Greek tavern has an air reminiscent of Greece itself. Your moustachioed host Stavros Abougelis has been running this traditional Greek tavern for nearly 25 years. The food is as hearty as Stavros himself. Baked lamb shanks and moussaka are house specialties, and a homemade Greek dessert is the perfect way to end dinner. On Friday and Saturday nights there's a live Greek band and you're encouraged to indulge in Greek dancing and the age-old tradition of plate smashing. Opa!

Good greek threat
we went there several times and had always plenty of delicious food. I love the gyros there, one of my friends swears for the goat. Mousaka seems to be very good as well. Not a big menu, but very delicous. And they sell a small bottle of quzo for 20 bucks, a must buy to share during the feast...

Stavros
We went to Stavros Tavern to celebrate a family function, after readign reviews on the net. We were that we visisted the place, as the Greek food is the best we have sampled in Melbourne besting the more hyped Greek Restaurants by far. The food including the staples like mezze platter and char-grilled octupus were great. The gyros were good and the Marlin Steak and Lamp Chops from the Specials menu were excellent. The only discordant note was the chill in the air due to the inoperative fireplace. Service was old fashioned as it should be. A great place as it has had one owner and one chef over its lifetime, a rarity. Visit it, its time and money well spent.

Brilliant Greek Food / Go For The Specials Board!
Excellent quality & value Greek food - warm cozy atmosphere especially when the open fire is roaring. friendly/knowledgeable waiters
Recommend the following selection for 2-4 people to share: Gyros $22 approx - tender, flavorsome meat/generous serve Mezze Dips $23 approx - the best dips platter I have ever had. Wonderful selection of breads/dips/anti pasto + 1-2 items from the specials board. I have never been disappointed by the chefs selection of specials.
This restaurant gets very busy on the weekends you must book at least a week in advance.

Must try
It was only the fact that we couldn't get a table inside on a cold night that put a dampener on our experience. The food (particularly the calamari and gyros) was scrumptious and our waiter more than accommodating. Will definitely go again in summer - an outdoors table on a summer night with the sea breeze would be perfect.

Stavros Tavern
Exquisite cuisine, fantastic service. I can't go past the saganaki, lamb gyros, and baklava. Try some of the Greek wine, it's delightful.

Splendid service
It was suggested to me by others to make the trek to Stavros and I cannot say I was disappointed. It was particularly the service that will leave me with fond memories of Stavros and indeed Stavros himself making the effort to chat with his customers was most refreshing. Our entree was superb - a delectable tasting plater, the scrumptious olive bread (yum!) and dips and a not-too-salty or not-too-chewy saganaki made for a superb start to our meal. Unfortunately, the mains did not match the quality of our earlier dishes with the gyros too charcoaled for my liking and some other minor complaints with the dishes from others on the table. Nevertheless, I would return to Stavros!
