Star Anise Bistro

A decidedly refined little bistro under the guidance of wunderkind Emma Chapple, Star Anise is a must when visiting country Victoria's Kyneton. Without a doubt, the restaurant's signature dish (a salad of star anise-spiced crispy duck, roasted baby beetroots and pickled cherries) is sure to delight. There's also an intriguing list of small/entree-style plates that are great for those wishing to taste a few different flavours. These smaller plates may include pork and fennel meatballs with tomato and white beans; or lemon-crumbed sardine fillets with roasted garlic aioli.

Sweet lovers paradise
Having struggled for a few months to get a booking (very popular Sunday lunch and all evenings they are opened), four of us had a very special Saturday night dinner at Star Anise. The menu is small but don t be put off by not having a large selection less is more here. We skipped entrees to keep room for sweets. We had four different mains that we were all very pleased with. However it was the sweets that were sublime. One of the best sweets I have ever had. Presented by colour, the tasting plates were original and surprising, mixing textures and temperatures to delight. The service was discreet yet efficient. Our only negative for the evening was our table being position quite close to the toilets. The compensation was that we were in a room to ourselves, which made for a very pleasant evening. We will be returning indeed we have booked to take more out of town friends here in the near future.
