Stanley's - the Great Aussie Fish Cafe

Stanley's has become a hallmark in the gastronomic world tour that is Adelaide's Gouger Street. Boasting the cream of South Australia's seafood crop, the dishes on offer at this fish cafe range from oysters and prawns to whiting and barramundi. Succulent Moreton Bay bugs feature prominently on the menu. The restaurant room is plainly decorated and there is a pleasant beer garden for use in the warmer months.

This was a great dining experience, Fish was superb
Situated on Gouger St near Adelaide's fabulous Central Market.
True, Stanley's have been preparing seafood for longer than the average age of their diners, 40 years. Over this period of time the restaurant has been the recipient of a number of prestigious culinary awards. Having also dined some of Australia's best fish gourmets. (Big Fish) For entree we had cooked to perfection calamari. From a large range of seafood dishes, we chose the Aussie Special and the King George Whiting, for which SA is famous. The portions were generous, mouth watering, served with fries and garnished with a crisp colorful salad. The desserts were equally delicious, sticky date pudding, which was delightfully sticky, a peach and passion fruit cheesecake, peachy. The restaurant is licensed with an excellent range of predominately SA wines. Beer's, Ciders, Spirits, Liqueurs, Aperitifs and Ports. All the usual hot beverages are also available. Good friendly service. A very pleasant evening.

Maybe it was because it was the holiday period? Perhaps 9pm was too late for this Adelaide kitchen. As a visitor from interstate, opting for seafood this evening with two friends seemed a good idea.

The water and wine arrived promptly.

After 45 minutes still no sign of three pieces of fish we ordered with the (now finished) drinks. Maybe the seafood option wasn’t the best idea?

Another 10 minutes later the girl on the table next to us, offers a friendly smile saying "It’s not normally like this, well I don’t think it was…should we order breakfast?" We all laugh and I ask our waitress how much longer we should wait and if there’s a problem in the kitchen? The front-of-house woman updates us and the three adjoining tables “Not to worry, it’s on its way”.

It’s now more then an hour later and I spy three plates heading our way. Excitement overcomes the hunger pangs but even without my glasses I’m slightly concerned about the colour of the fish when it’s placed in front of me?

A mouthful of snappe’ and the wait wasn’t worth it! It’s tasteless. I ask one of my guests to try and they politely shake their head: ‘not good'. They push apart their fish warily...

I can’t be cross with the young waitress but ask her to take it back to the kitchen… she apologises and says it will be removed from the bill.

As we leave disappointed, the wrong bill is presented with no offer of apology other than ‘the kitchen thinks the fish was fine.’

Too tired to step into a ‘service’ discussion, I’m writing to other readers to avoid an unpleasant fishy experience.

Opening the door to leave, the women with the friendly smile next to us is now beetroot colour ‘choking’.
