Trading in Melbourne's bustling Lonsdale street Greek precinct since 1978, Nondas and Maria Konstandakopoulos' Stalactites still boasts a strong family vibe. Open 24 hours, seven days a week, it is a virtual institution for dinner functions, early breakfasts and late night eating. Its famous staple, fresh gyros souvlaki, caters perfectly to the greasy cravings of the city's after-work bar crawlers, with an equally satisfying braised and skewered vegetable option for vegetarians. The restaurant's rather retro faux-cave interior, complete with namesake dangling stalactites, is endearingly kitsch, but the fare is genuinely traditional Greek cuisine.

Quite a discovery...
I dined here with 10 out of town colleagues.
Firstly, extra points for fitting us in; they were busy and we only gave them an hour's notice..
Service was slow at first, but things get moving fairly quickly. This is casual dining at its best really. The food was terrific and there was something for everyone. The wine list is affordable and everyone agreed it was the meal of the trip...

Love it!!
Every month or so we come from the Mornington peninsula and stay in the city. Akways on our list of things to do is to dine at Stalactites! Great food, well priced & good sized serves. It can be noisy and the service sometimes a little slow due to being busy all the time. This is the place to be for a quick souvlaki or a casual dine in meal!

An awakening
My first Melbourne souvlaki has set a very high standard. We grabbed souvlakis to take away, and the sheer weight of them was promising. A delicious meal-in-a-parcel with the perfect combination of caramelised, charred lamb chunks, tart tsatziki, onion, garlic, lettuce and tomatoes. Perfection, and it really hit the spot. The place was packed at 11pm on a Sunday, which is a good sign - and the long operating hours are a real bonus. Highly recommended.

A taste of Athens
After seeing Stalactites on "Coxy's Big Break" recently, i had a chance to dine in that resturant. I love the food and the service is very good. I said to myself, i should come back here to eat soemthing else and reccomend it to my freinds. I wish i can meet Nicole, the spokesgirl for this resturant.

A melbourne institution
Open 24/7, you know you'll get a good feed when you go to Stalactites. Whether sober or soused, the souvlaki or giros tastes juicy. It also gets bonus marks for being pretty much the only place in the Melbourne CBD where you can pick up a souva for your midnight - or later - cravings!
