Saint Jude was a Christian saint in the New Testament. He's not the evil dude who betrayed Jesus but a nice guy who was the patron saint of lost causes and 'cases despaired of' - the kind of stuff people did back then. It's a pretty impressive job title, but St Jude's Cellars in Fitzroy is anything but a lost cause. If, however, you're looking for a bit of liquid salvation, this bar-slash-restaurant is probably well placed to serve you a glass or two.
Having taken over the former Bungalow 8 premises, James Langley and Laki Papadopoulos (of Panama Dining Room and Vegie Bar fame) have gone all out in tarting the joint up and have done an excellent job of introducing the north side to the world of clean facades.
A monochromatic scheme renders the decor crisp and purposeful, and a white tiled bar top, polished concrete floors and white washed brick walls create a perfect canvas for good wine and food.
There's a cellar (naturally) from which you can cherry pick your favourite drop, while the menu offers hearty meals such as slow-cooked kurobuta pork scotch with celery heart and parsley sauce. Sounding like something from the pages of the Bible itself, the fish wrapped in vine leaves with lemon and oregano is also an excellent choice, and would make one tasty last supper indeed.

Eating at the bar on a wednesday night
We wanted a light meal without spending a fortune (it was our last night in Melbourne) and really enjoyed ourselves here. The food was fine, although one dish was replaced (the same dish second time round was perfect, and we weren't charged for it), the house red very drinkable, and the service friendly and efficient. Excellent value and we've already recommended it to Australian friends from Sydney who visit Melbourne regularly.

Wine for dinner
Good wine is hard to find? not here I had some fab nebbiolo from Lombardy so so cheaply! was a label I was not aware of which shows how much I need to learn still but these guys here talked me into it and WOW. I had it with this Boer goat dish off the char grill and I am still tasting it now! the annoying vegetarian was pleased as well, some french mushroom hotpot for her. What a great place!

Great menu, service falls in a hole.
Many visits to St Jude's have confirmed a wonderful menu. Hearty wintery stews, beautiful salads with subtle dressings, meals that come together extremely well. Service is unfortunately a weak-link with mains not served till three hours after arrival on a group booking made weeks in advance.

Outstanding atmosphere...very versatile
Amazing place, nice high ceilings and you get all sorts of diners, from after work diners to friday night drinks, quite a relaxed environment...and the food is great, quite modern. The service was a little slow, however, their recommendations or wine and beer were fantastic. Would recommend

What does a person have to do to get a glass of wine?
A wine bar where the floor staff can't answer questions about the wine on the wine list? Staff that leave you standing while they go and see if there's a table available without asking if you'd like a seat at the bar and a drink while you wait? The food at St Jude's is good and I love the concept of being able to order multiple dishes to taste and share but sadly it seemed just too difficult to get a drink. The floor staff didn't know anything about the wine, the sommelier was busy elsewhere and the wait between getting a wine list and having someone take the order was just too long. You shouldn't have to go in search of staff to order wine at a wine bar. St Jude's is obviously a trendy place, shame they can't be bothered responding to feedback (I emailed them). Most disappointing.
