Impressive is the only way to describe Spice I Am - The Restaurant, and this is without considering the food that has already wowed diners at its homely Surry Hills sibling, Spice I Am. It's as if, with the opening of this restaurant, something beautiful has bloomed into something awe-inspiring, considering the original's humble beginnings as a crowded but popular Thai diner tucked away in Wentworth Avenue.
The decor is slick and sexy, with dark wood tables and gold trimming creating a rich and warm interior. The adjoining cocktail lounge offers diners the opportunity for a pre- or post-dinner drink, with luscious cocktails made from the freshest rambutans and mangoes flown in daily from Darwin.
Fans of this trendy spot's little sister will be delighted to know that wunder-chef Sujet Saenkham is overseeing the stoves here too, so expect the same fresh and fragrant offerings along with a slew of 20 new dishes designed specifically to excite the palate.

servings small? not tonight!
poor value for money. i'm a visitor to sydney so i'm not quite up to speed on how the pricing works here, but a bottle of *water* for more than a decent glass of wine? perleese!?
atmosphere and decor locked in the late 80s somewhere which could have been fun but wasn't, as the clientele mostly didn't seem to be having much fun being there... a few boring looking dates and lots of tourist walkins. made the mistake of going there having seen some of the pavement-seated customers looking to be enjoying a balmy sydney night. and their food LOOKED great, which it all does...
presentation very nice...
...but the flavours were a bit muddied (basa fish red curry v good tho).. and servings ENORMOUS: solo eaters be warned (not sure why the earlier reviewers thought the serving small!)
staff lovely.

Delicious thai - crowded but stylish venue - some hot dishes!
I have to disagree with the last review. We found the portions very reasonable and four mains and two entrees shared between four adults more than adequate. The papaya salad was extremely chili hot though and maybe chili ratings on dishes would be good, although real thai food is hot and Spice I Am is dishing up authentic thai food. The crab and duck dishes went down the best. Despite being very busy and tables being rather close the noise didn't seem to be an issue and we didn't notice other conversations. Very friendly staff.

Don't bother
Went for dinner here on a Friday night with high expectations given the popularity of its Surry Hills sister. Unlike many other Thai restuarants, the options for vegetarians were extremely limited (only one entree and two mains). The atmosphere was nice although the dning area itself looked very cramped. The food is terrible value and the portions are meagre - one dish which purported to be a prawn dish contained only one prawn! Also the spiciness of the food comes without warning -one dish was so spicy as to be basically inedible. A diner at a nearby table had to send his meal back because it was just too spicy. The cocktails were good but you can get good cocktails in most bars; you come to a restaurant for good food. Unfortunately despite the slick decor, this is not the place to find either good food or good value. Pure style over substance.
