One of the most authentic Thai eateries in Sydney, Spice I Am has been packing in hungry locals and Thai patrons ever since word leaked out about its excellent traditional fare. Forget the same-o pad Thai - you come here for real homestyle food like Isan-style curries, fermented rice dishes, Northern-style pork sausages, and yes, a great version of pad Thai. They pack them in and churn them out, and the benefit is that you get great produce (some of it even air-freighted in) and clever cooking at Thai-riffic prices.

If you like spicy Thai, this is your place!
Went there with the kids and got lucky to find a spot. The place was crowded. We tried the Pad Thai, beef in yellow curry, chicken cashew and chicken basil. The chicken dishes were wicked hot but was very tasty. The curry dish was semi hot and equally good. The Pad Thai was excellent.

Spicy means spicy!
I've eaten here a few times and 90% of the time I've had to wait but if you leave your mobile number they will phone you when your table is ready. Have a drink at the art deco Hollywood Hotel around the corner while you wait!
The curry fish in banana leaf parcels and som tum are my favourites. Meals are spicy spicy so order mild if you don't like mouth burn.
Reasonably priced and fairly true to authentic Thai. Casual and busy eatery style.

Not your average Thai
Show up early or late, or be prepared to wait for a seat. Order something different to get a much better experience - forego the pad Thai or green curry.
The salads are the best - yum woon saen and khai ka tee are unbeatable for flavour, and the tom yum gai soup is spectacular. Anything marked with ‘S’ for ‘specialty’ is sure to be good. If you are looking for a curry, the massaman curry is hard to beat - make sure to get a ‘full serve’ if attending at lunch, with a serve of rice on the side.
If you are looking for a good pad Thai, go to Prasits. If you want a modern sweet curry, get the red duck curry at Thai Pothong in Newtown. But if you want flavoursome, authentic Thai, then the wait is worth it at Spice I Am. But be sure to choose the good dishes!

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE We had high expectations of this place given the incredibly positive reviews. However, we were very disappointed, as the portions are relatively small. Don't order the crispy fish. The tamarind prawns were yummy. The garlic pepper beef stir-fry was quite tasty but overcooked. Crispy chicken basil was mediocre. Rice was good.

There is a reason why the SMH awarded this place best Asian resturant in Sydney for 05/2006, it is fabulous. Quick service, great food at reasonable prices. It is by far the best Thai place in either Syd or Mel.
