Sparrow

Sparrow nested on William Street in 1993, and is still thriving, with numerous awards tucked under its wing and hardly a table to be had on Friday and Saturday evenings. It's the rare combination of cheap, quality food and cheerful service that keeps this humble little Indonesian eatery flying high. Owner and front man Wei Chin offers warm Indonesian hospitality in quantities as generous as the dishes his wife Noni Lee creates. Cooking in the traditional home-style of her homeland, Noni's speciality is ikan balado (fish fillet in a red capsicum and chilli sauce), but her Balinese-style chicken in thick curry sauce and beef rending prove just as popular with Sparrow's flock of regulars. None of the dishes exceed the $9 mark, with many dishes costing less than $5. It's cash only too, so give the credit card a night off and just take along a few notes, together with a bottle of your preferred plonk, as there's no corkage charge either. Although there is a good selection of non-alcoholic liquid refreshment to wash it all down with, most notably the pleasantly sweet and mildly flavoured ice cendol, traditionally known as the 'Indonesian cappuccino'.

You HAVE to go!
I am now a regular at Sparrow, thank god my boyfriend introduced me to it! On my first visit, I was a little apprehensive - as I didn't really know what to expect as I hadn't been to an Indonesian restaurant in Perth before.
The owner is just too sweet for words! He's so cheerful and makes you feel very welcome. Our meals arrived very promptly, and didn't stay on the plates for long at all! We ordered 2 entrees and 3 mains and 2 desserts between us (give the black rice pudding a go, it's scary to look at, but it is delicious) and we brought along a bottle of wine, and walked away paying a measly $35 in total. No corkage is charged, and if it's your first visit at Sparrow, the owner gives you 10% off (but seriously, when you are paying $35 for 3 courses for two people, you really don't need a further discount).
Do yourself a favour and check it out, it may not be the most fancy venue, but the staff and food make up for it!

So cheap, so tasty!
Heard good things about Sparrow, did not disappoint. On a hunt to find a very cheap meal, it was a saviour! My table walked away with a bill of $10 per person, incredible! No corkage! More people need to look outside the crappy (and expensive) restaurants of inner Northbridge and find the Asian gems like Sparrow, verging on Highgate territory.

The place is just an average-looking Indonesian restaurant I'd bill as not flashy; it's very family. The service was quick and friendly. It is a place for families, first dates and girly dinners. The atmosphere was so mixed but perfect.

The beef rendang was a highlight, along with the fish in coconut sauce and the sweet and spicy squid. Just go - at the price, how could you not?!

Cheap and Tasty.. Laidback Vibe
Tasty and cheap meals. The staff and owner make you feel very welcome, great atmosphere, there was even the cliche scene where the whole restaurant broke into happy birthday for one patron.

The meal was inexpensively priced and the service fairly prompt, even though the restaurant was busy on a Saturday night. The roast quail and the iced tea were great! The other dishes were standard good Indonesian, but very tasty regardless.

The staff should tell diners that some dishes are really only for 1 serving, as my guests and I made the mistake of under-ordering for 4 and made no mention of this, sadly.
