Sotano Wine and Tapas Bar

Wine, cheese and tapas make a tempting trio of tastes to be tried at Sotano Wine and Tapas Bar. Located in the luscious Hilton Melbourne South Wharf, this unique venue follows in the hotel's stylish footsteps (heels and all). The space is dressed to the nines, with seven-metre-high, wood-panelled ceilings, a phenomenal climate-controlled cellar holding more than 2200 bottles, and a tall charcuterie centrepiece of meats and cheeses. Style and warmth come together in the cosy lounge areas and communal tables, designed for lengthy sessions of tapas and wine indulgence. To top it off, the outdoor area provides an intimate space to gaze dreamily over the Yarra River.

Disappointed
After reading the promos I thought this restaurant should be worth a visit. How bitterly disappointed we were.

The "service" was non-existent. We were continually ignored by what appeared to be adequate staff for the less than 25% full restaurant. We had to approach bar staff, after a 5 minute wait, to arrange to be seated. After that it was another 15 minutes before we finally went to the bar for drinks and food menu service. No-one came to our table during this time. then tere was another 10 minute wait for the drinks to arrive. The food, which was very good, was served promptly however, no-one came to see if we required further drinks and again we had to fend for ourselves. At the end of the night we waited for 20 minutes before we finally approached a staff member who was cleaning tables nearby to see if he could arrange our bill. In the end I had to go to the bar, once again, to get service. I'm not sure what the ample staff were trying to prove but if they were on a deliberate go slow and annoy the patrons, then they achieved their goals. It was appalling service!!!

wouldn't bother
Despite having more staff than patrons it was difficult to get served a drink initally.
Later we ordered from the table but gave up waiting for the drinks to arrive after 20 minutes. (There were still few patrons so being busy was not their excuse).

Later - after waiting about 5 minutes for a staff member to approach us(all too busy standing at bar pretending not to see us)- confusion reigned when we wanted to sit down in the meals area for our meal. Despite not checking any list I was told we definately did not have a reservation at 7 and directed to the nuevo restaurant; staff there checked and of course our reservation is at sotano so back we go. (During the course of the evening several parties were herded to the nuevo restaurant and then sent back to Sotano)

The food was fairly ordinary. The prices were on the expensive side.

The drinks waiter who forgot our order when we were at the first table came back later and asked "are youse right for a drink?"

We were assured the paella would feed two people. But that would be the case only if you had filled up on tapas first. (However the paella was decently priced for the size).

Good : food came out fairly quick, interesting looking area
Bad: poor service, ordinary but expensive food
